This $9.4 Million Georgian Estate Presides Over 22 Acres of Stunning English Countryside
The Grade II-listed Arthington Hall in West Yorkshire is on the market, and it’s asking £7.5 million (or about $9.4 million). Dating back to the mid-15th century, the estate sprawls over 22 acres and occupies the site of a former Cluniac nunnery that had been funded by the Arthington family in the late 1200s.
Following a fire in the late 1700s, prominent British architect John Carr was commissioned by Henry Arthington to transform the damaged building into a lavish home. Carr is best known for the design of Harewood House, which is also located in West Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the Treasure Houses of England.

Beyond Arthington Hall’s architectural pedigree, the manor house also has a place in showbiz history. The Georgian estate was previously used as a filming location for Emmerdale, the long-running UK soap opera, and it also appeared on Heartbeat, a beloved police procedural period drama.
In more recent years, the home has been completely restored and renovated by its current owners. Elements like underfloor heating, air conditioning, a gym, and a cinema help make the place feel more modern. Even the grounds got a revamp and now feature a walled garden, a greenhouse, and a four-car garage.
“Arthington Hall is one of the most magnificent country houses in all of Yorkshire,” says Ed Stoyle, head of Savills York, in a press statement. “It is rare to see such a beautifully presented Grade II Georgian country house that has been so thoughtfully restored.”
Inside, there are more than 20,000 square feet of living space with eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and six spacious reception rooms including a drawing room, a dining room, a library, a family lounge, and an entertainment room.
You’ll also find a ton of lovely period details throughout. Most notably, Carr created a “flying staircase” for the foyer, in which two flights meet at a central landing and form a single flight that looks as if it’s floating.
“Arthington Hall offers a classical facade behind which lies a family house suitable for modern living, all set in an outstanding landscape,” adds Stoyle.
Outstanding, indeed.
