9-1-1 fans don’t know how much more they can handle after Eddie (Ryan Guzman) handed over his resignation letter.

A month after Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) said a tearful goodbye, Eddie also made an important decision for him and his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh). After showing severe signs of distress, Christopher confessed to Eddie that he was putting a lot of pressure on the holiday because the two were on the clock. Afterward, Eddie admitted that he was stunned by Christopher’s words but promised him that he wasn’t going anywhere. Still, Eddie knew it wasn’t something he could guarantee. Ultimately, the Los Angeles firefighter decided to walk away from his job for the sake of his son’s wellbeing.

“[Christopher is] worried about me, about the risks I take while I’m at work,” Eddie said on the show. “I think I have to make a change. I’m leaving the 118.”

While Bobby (Peter Krause) seemed to take the news well, Eddie got a different reaction from Buck (Oliver Stark), Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody). His fellow firefighters were left speechless before the screen cut to black and the end credits began to roll. Despite Eddie seeming confident in his decision, fans immediately began asking if he was really leaving engine 118. Unfortunately, viewers won’t get confirmation until next year. As it turns out, the latest episode, “Wrapped in Red,” was the fall finale for 9-1-1 season 5.

That said, actor Ryan Guzman, who has played Eddie since season 2 of the Fox drama, might have dropped hints about what’s to come. On December 2, a few days before the latest episode aired, Ryan took to his Instagram to share a selfie from the set of 9-1-1. “Stage 4 Eddie Diaz. Comin soon...,” he captioned it.

But that wasn’t all. Ryan also included four emojis that seemed to be representative of milestones in Eddie’s life, according to Newsweek. First, there is an army helmet which could signify his time in the U.S. Army as a medic in Afghanistan. Second is a medal that may stand for the silver star he received or the St. Christopher's medallion his late wife gave him. Third is a fire truck representing his time at the L.A. Fire Department. Lastly, there's a pigeon, but this is the missing piece of the puzzle.

“Now what is stage 4 supposed to mean…,” one person wrote in the Instagram comments section. “Decode the bird emoji for us please king,” another added. “Um a bird he better not die or something I would be done,” a different fan said. “Birds flies away. You’re leaving the show???” a follower commented.

It’s almost a sure thing that he saw fans blowing up his Instagram post with questions. Even still, Ryan has stayed quiet about how it relates to Eddie’s next chapter. In other words, we're going to have to wait several months to find out what happens next. ICYMI: The second half of 9-1-1 season 5 returns in March.
