Throughout her three-decade career in TV and film, actress Angela Bassett has been crowned a winner at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. (Who could forget her portrayal of Tina Turner?!) The 63-year-old New York native has also earned well-deserved nominations at the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards (both Primetime and Daytime) and BET Awards for her impressive work on screen. Now, Angela is sharing her gratitude after being recognized by the NAACP Image Awards.

On January 18, the nominees for the upcoming 53rd NAACP Image Awards were revealed and among the 80+ competitive categories — which span across movies, TV shows, music, podcasts and literature — Angela received two nods.

Of course, 9-1-1 fans won’t be completely surprised. Since the show's premiere in 2018, Angela has dominated Monday nights as the fictional LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant on 9-1-1. In February 2020 when Angela was first nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for the same role, she took home the win. Five seasons in, she has landed another nomination in the same category, alongside Truth Be Told’s Octavia Spencer, Queen Sugar's Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Rutina Wesley and The Equalizer’s Queen Latifah.

What’s more, nearly a year after lending her voice for Fox’s wildlife documentary Malika: The Lion Queen, which premiered in April 2021, Angela is up for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance (Television). She is in the running alongside the likes of Billy Porter, Ludacris and Keke Palmer.

After hearing the exciting news, the former American Horror Story star took to her Instagram Stories to celebrate with a shoutout to the awards ceremony, which honors the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color. “Thank you @NAACP for the nomination 🥰,” she wrote.

This marks Angela’s 13th and 14th nomination at the NAACP Awards. Since her first one in 1995, she has won a whopping 11 times, and something tells us she might just do it again next month when the show airs on February 26. In the meantime, Angela has other exciting projects coming up, like a modern remake of the classic Christmas 1996 movie The Preacher’s Wife. Angela also recently announced that she’s going to be an executive producer on a docuseries with her husband, Courtney B. Vance, called One Thousand Years of Slavery — The Untold Story.
