85th annual Bike Week kicks off in Murrells Inlet

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — The 85th Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Rally kicked off Friday.

Various events, music and food will be available up and down the Grand Strand through May 19.

Thousands of bikers from across the country visit the Grand Strand twice a year for bike week. Rallies and events are held from Little River all the way down to Murrells Inlet.

Beaver Bar and SBB, which are popular biker bars in the Inlet were swarming with people excited for the first day.

Ed Pinero drove 13 hours from south Mississippi to attend the rally and says it’s his second time at the event and it’s got everything.

“Well, there’s a bunch of bands, there’s a lot of good food to eat and, you know, we’re going to do a little bit of the beach also so it’s not all going to be Harley,” Pinero said.

Organizers say they’ve already seen a bigger turnout than previous years on day one.

Not only were bikers enjoying the event, but families were too. The Krewson family is from Murrells Inlet and loves to attend the event each year.

“Well, we wanted to bring the boys out here,” Dalton Krewson said. “They love bikes, they love the attention, so, and they love shopping.”

Not only is Bike Week a big deal for bikers of course, but vendors as well.

Kevin Mcguire is a trustee with the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh. It’s an Irish heritage chapter here in the Carolina’s that gives back to local communities.

He says events like this are important for gaining exposure.

“As we grow, we want the community to know who we are and what we are so that we can reach out to local businesses, have a name that they know and trust to give us donations so that we can pass it on,” Mcguire said.

Brandon Swain, a veteran who works with vendor True Vet Solutions to advocate for VA healthcare, echoes the same.

“It’s huge because when there’s bikers, there’s always veterans,” Swain said.

The fall bike rally will take place this year from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.
