'80s-inspired puffy sleeves are making a major comeback on the Emmys red carpet
It’s the bigger the better when it comes to sleeves on the 2019 Emmy Awards red carpet. Plenty of stars are choosing bold, billowing, and exaggerated puffy sleeves that remind us of those classic ’80s wedding dresses. (But way better, we promise.) From Mandy Moore’s epic color-blocked look to Erin Lim’s flouncy ruffles, these sleeves are giving us major nostalgia—just, thankfully, without the shoulder pads. Here are some of our favorite sculpted, puffed-up sleeve moments from the 2019 Emmys.
Mandy Moore
A straight red skirt balanced out Mandy Moore’s puffy three-quarter sleeve top.
Dascha Polanco
Poofy pink sleeves added lots of drama to Dascha Polanco’s otherwise sleek baby pink gown.
Alex Borstein
Alex Borstein’s eggplant-colored gown was complemented not just by her bedazzled initials on the lapel (a true power move), but some strong-shouldered sleeves as well.
Vera Farmiga
Vera Farmiga looks feminine and chic in a red dress with princess-style cap long sleeves.
Heidi Gardner
Heidi Gardner’s sweet floral gown features a plunging neckline and elegant puffy sleeves.
Lilly Singh
We love the way Lilly Singh balances out her one sculpted sleeve with a ruched waistline and bare shoulder.
Natasha Lyonne
Natasha Lyonne looks statuesque in a full-body gold dress featuring, you guessed it, flowy sleeves.
Erin Lim
Erin Lim chose voluminous, ruffled sleeves that cascaded down her gown’s plunging back.
Susan Kelechi Watson
Perhaps taking inspiration from her This is Us co-star, Susan Kelechi Watson participated in the puffy sleeve trend by accentuating her sophisticated red gown with fun, satin pink ones.
Sara Sutherland
Sara Sutherland turned heads in a demure pink top and matching skirt, featuring off-the-shoulder short sleeves that had just the right amount of extra volume.
We sense a fall trend on the horizon.
