We all know that our eyebrows are the frames of our faces, it's partly why we've always been so obsessed with them. Trends have changed throughout the decade (hello pencil-thin arches and bold Instagram brows), but no matter what's en vogue, we've always paid special attention to our eyebrows. Enter: an influx of brow products and makeup techniques to help us achieve the look we strive for.

For example, we know that gels will help raise our hairs to the gods to achieve the soap brow look, and we know that powders help filling sparse brows. With that said, have you ever considered highlighter an essential product to use in your brow routine? It's not the most obvious product to grab for when filling and defining your eyebrows in the morning, but experts say it could bring the whole look together while simultaneously brightening your overall look.

To better understand how to use highlighter to achieve our best brows ever, we tapped three celebrity makeup artists to ask them where we should place it, the types of formulas they recommend, and application. Plus, they even shared some of their favorite highlighters they use on their A-list clientele. Below, find the eight tips they swear by and learn how to easily incorporate them into your makeup routine.

Meet the Experts

  • Kelsey Deenihan is a Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist and works with A-listers like Kelsea Ballerini and Millie Bobby Brown.

  • Jamie Greenberg is a celebrity makeup artist based in LA who works with stars such as Chelsea Handler and Kaley Cuoco.

  • Sabrina Bedrani is a celebrity makeup artist and brand ambassador for Dior. She works with celebrities such as Sofia Vergara and Michelle Yeoh.

1. Apply Highlighter On Your Eyebrow Tail

The placement of your eyebrow highlighter dictates the overall look and effect the highlighter has on the shape, size, and definition of your eye and brow area. "Placing a small amount of highlighter at the end of the brow around the temple area will add dimension and give an overall glow to the skin," explains makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan. You can use a powder, cream, highlighting pen, or pencil. We're fans of this multitasking pencil from Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil ($22) in the shade Boundless Bisque.

2. Use Highlighter Under Your Brow

"Highlighting under the brows was all the rage in the '90s, and it's back, but not in the same way," makeup artist Jamie Greenberg tells us. "I like to add a very light, well-milled highlighter on the eyebrow to create more of a shape." She loves the Thrive Causemetics Brilliant Eye Brightener ($25) for its eye-catching hint of shimmer.

3. Emphasize Your Inner Eye Corners

As Greenberg explains, the main goal of highlighting the brow is to define your eye area and make them look bigger. To amplify the effect and create a spark, she loves to place highlighter in the corner of the eyes, in addition to beneath the brow bone.

4. Apply Highlighter Under Your Brow Bone

According to Bedrani, eyebrow highlighter can lift the appearance of the eye and fake a wider, perkier gaze. Her suggestion: To give the brow an instant lift, apply a smudge of highlighter directly under the brow bone. The Sisley-Paris Phyto-Sourcils Design 3-in-1 Eyebrow Pencil ($73) is beloved by team Byrdie and is the ultimate triple threat. Smudge the highlight underneath the eye per Bedrani's instructions, comb, fill in your brows, and then blend, baby, blend.

5. Be Light-Handed With Powders

When it comes to highlighter around the brow bone, a little goes a long way, warns makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani: "Too much highlighter in this area can look distracting, so the key is to be subtle with your application. Dior's Forever Couture Luminizer ($50), is an excellent powder formula, and Bedrani says "the powder is really fine so you get a nice subtle shine, and the pigment is perfect for any kind of skin tone."

6. Use a Fluffy Makeup Brush to Diffuse

To ensure a feather-light application, Bedrani reaches for a fluffy brush: "I start under the arch of the brow and brush outward along the brow bone so I get less product at the end of the brow. I then check in the mirror, turning the head right and left to see how much reflection I get, and apply more if needed." Deenihan adds that these fluffy makeup brushes, such as Fenty Beauty Tapered Blending Brush 210 ($24), work with both powder and cream formulas, so don't be afraid to try different types of products.

7. Experiment With Matte Highlighters

"Your eyebrow highlighter can be cream or shadow, and it doesn't have to have a lot of sparkle to it to create impact," explains Greenberg. "Just make sure it's a lighter color than your brow, and make sure to blend it in." The Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighting Duo Pencil ($23) is double-ended highlighter duo that offers matte and subtly shimmery finishes is perfect for on-the-go touch-ups.

8. Try Highlighter Balms For a Natural Glow

A balmy highlighter is a great choice to add a natural glow sans shimmer to the brow bone, just make sure to you pick a formula without added glitter or shine — we like Ami Colé's Light Catching Highlighter ($22) and Tower28's SuperDew Highlighter ($18). The best way to apply is to take a bit on your finger and gently tap along the brow bone and along the temples.
