8 Top Trends from the Resort 2020 Collections

Consider it a cheat sheet for next year, with some first-rate vacation inspiration thrown in for good measure.

Resort season, also referred to as cruise, has become synonymous with blowout designer runway bashes in exotic locations. This year was no different, and it was business as usual for a traveling band of models and editors who made their way across the Atlantic Ocean and back again to walk in or attend the shows. Passports at the ready, Christian Dior kicked off proceedings in Marrakech, before Prada and Louis Vuitton popped up in New York, Max Mara in Berlin, Chloé in Shanghai and Gucci in Rome. For Chanel's first collection since the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the house's new Artistic Director Virginie Viard opted to stay put in Paris, but not without ceremony: The Grand Palais was transformed into a 1930s-esque train station, complete with a steam train, waiting room and a café called "Le Riviera."

There was some great fashion, too. In keeping with what we saw on the runways for fall, suiting continued to be a major hit with designers across the board, as did bold shoulders and leather. On the other end of the spectrum, there was plenty of romance. It has an edge to it, though — particularly at Gucci where Alessandro Michele embroidered dresses with a pink uterus and the date "22.05.1978" — the day a law protecting legal abortion in Italy took effect. Side by side with just about everything, there were masses of florals on the runway as well.

Suit Up

Resort's overarching message was laser-sharp tailoring and suits. The options are endless: Go with an extra-wide leg at Chanel, polka dot at Chloé, Burberry's classic camel, or cinch at the waist à la Daniel Lee's brilliant Bottega Veneta debut.

Orange Is the New Black

From rust to sherbet to traffic cone, think "orange" when it comes to picking out your wardrobe's color palette six months from now. It makes for a striking monochrome look, but if that's not your style, stick to splashes underneath a blazer or paired with classic denim.

Bold Shoulders

Balmain takes the cake for the biggest shoulders, but Louis Vuitton and Moschino both offered up alternatives in slightly smaller proportions. At Hellessy, the trend took a sculptural twist: Designer Sylvie Millstein draped and twisted fabric into oversized, floppy bows on a stunning range of cocktail dresses.

'70s Vibes

Bohemian wanderlust defined the '70s and was an obvious reference on designer mood boards for Resort 2020. Favorites that jump to mind include Christian Dior, Coach, Altuzarra, Missoni and Gucci.

Precious Metals

A sense of sparkle ran through lots of the resort collections, but it was more subdued than in recent seasons past. Think silver, gold and bronze over anything jewel toned or remotely fluorescent.

Allover Leather

Along with a beautifully tailored suit, those looking for a statement purchase would do well to consider investing in a leather, well, anything come next year. Max Mara's David Bowie-meets-Marlene Dietrich-inspired collection delivered some of the strongest iterations of the trend.

Romance with a Twist

Alessandro Michele hasn't been shy about taking a stance on politics. Under his lead, Gucci donated $500,000 to March for Our Lives last year to help prevent gun violence. Now, he's tackling restrictive abortion bans on the runway in tandem with designing fairy tale dresses. Elsewhere, Moschino stood out for its scary movie-slash-Halloween take on the romance theme.

Say it with Flowers

Unsurprisingly, no designer could resist playing with florals for resort. Buzzy New York-based brand Collina Strada opted for the kind you might find on your grandma's couch or at a vintage market. Givenchy took the regal route, leaving us wondering if (or when) we might spot this collection on Meghan Markle.
