From an intro by Oprah Winfrey to Broadway-worthy musical numbers to music by DJ Zedd, the Emmys aimed high for 2022. What NBC delivered was mostly a night of joy and celebration. Host Keenan Thompson would have benefited from a co-host, but he still fired some edgy barbs at the expense of Netflix and Showtime.

The biggest hits of the night were the awards show’s first singing acceptance speech and a ton of love and admiration for 26-year-old, now-two-time Emmy winner Zendaya.

And that’s just what viewers got to see on TV. There was so much more happening behind the scenes. That’s why Parade.com was backstage to catch all of the off-camera action. Here are 8 things you didn’t see on TV at the 2022 Primetime Emmys.

Brett Goldstein “loses” his first Emmy

Brett Goldstein collected his second Emmy Monday night for his role on Ted Lasso, but the actor claims he only has one!

“Well, the first Emmy, my mum has it,” he said in the press room. “She says she’d look after it and then decided about six months ago she was never gonna give it back.” Fortunately, he has a second Emmy to keep for himself now. “As long as my dad doesn't get ahold of it. I think that's fair.”

Goldstein also piled on the admiration for Ted Lasso star and creator Jason Sudeikis. How far would he go? “Jason and the show completely changed my life, and I’m forever indebted to him. If Jason wants me to kill people, I will. Wait. Delete that. It won’t be good for court.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph is getting another honor

Sheryl Lee Ralph’s win—and powerful acceptance speech—was a highlight of the night. After rocking the audience with Diana Reeves’ “Endangered Species,” she told the press room about a second major honor that she’s excited to earn soon.

“There's a great big old watch party taking place in Kingston, Jamaica right now,” she said. “And the whole island is watching because in October, I go back and my name will change because I will become the honorable Shirley Ralph, order of Jamaica. It's like getting the Medal of Honor.”

As for what inspired her show-stopping singing acceptance speech, Ralph said she’d been singing that song for years.

“I think of myself as an artist, as a woman and as a woman of color. I'm an endangered species. And I don't sing any victim song. I'm a woman. I'm an artist, and I know where my voice belongs.”

John Oliver needs to protect his children

After picking up his fourth Emmy, John Oliver shared that while the trophies were a tremendous honor, they’re too dangerous to display in his home.

“I have two little children [born in 2015 and 2018]. Right. So this is not a criticism. It's a beautiful design, but that,” he said pointing to the two large and pointed wings on the trophy, “is not child friendly.”

He says he stores them in a closet where the children can’t get to them.

“This to a child is a weapon or something they could be impaled on if they fall over. So you can't even see them anywhere in my house because I have children.”

One helpful reporter hilariously suggested that Oliver place marshmallows on the trophies’ sharpened wings. John agreed that was a helpful suggestion.

No shirt, no problem for Jarrod Carmichael

Few actors turned more heads on the carpet than Jarrod Carmichael with his white fox fur coat and shirtless look. In the press room, he shared the meaning and the history of his unique look.

“It's vintage. Puff Daddy wore it in a music video,” he said. “It may as well be the Shroud of Turin to me. I’m very happy in it and happy I went with it. It goes well with gold.”

Michael Keaton made sure he wouldn’t miss his moment

Michael Keaton famously almost missed his SAG award when he took an inopportune bathroom break. For the Emmys, he made certain he wouldn’t miss the moment he collected his first Emmy for Dopesick.

“I drank very little water and I took no vitamins today just to make sure that I’d be there,” he said, joking with reporters.

He also shared that his entire career may have hinged on a single fateful raffle drawing.

“My dad won this little TV. It was a little box with a lousy, grainy black and white screen that one could argue kind of changed my life, he said. “I was infatuated with everything that came out of it. So then you say, you’re living in this quasi fantasy world of mine where you recreate things and my imagination was fertile going in. So that thing pushed me over the top.”

Amanda Seyfried reveals the trait she shares with Elizabeth Holmes

Amanda Seyfried collected her first Emmy for one of the most talked about performances of the year, her portrayal of disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout.

One of the things audiences couldn’t stop talking about was her character’s bizarre dance moves.

“It's funny,” she told Parade.com in the press room. “Elizabeth Holmes and I both were on the dance team in high school. I found that out very early on in my preparation and research… And according to someone I spoke to apparently she was not great.”

That’s one thing Seyfried and Holmes have in common: their arrhythmic movement.

“I was in the third row, which is where they put you if you’re not that great,” Seyfried said. “So the fact that we both have that in our past and the fact that I've seen her dance in a way that's unlike a good dancer that was one of the things that really made me feel connected to her. I know that sounds crazy, but that was one of the most fun parts about it. Oh, she's not super skilled as I also am not.”

Meg Stalter and Mark Indelicato are real-life BFFs

While conflict may be at the center of many relationships on Hacks, recurring stars Megan Stalter and Mark Indelicato, who play Deborah’s agent’s airhead assistant and Deborah’s assistant, respectively, get along swimmingly in real life.

Stalter and Indelicato told Parade.com that one of the best parts of working on the show was the deep and real friendships that have developed among the cast.

“It’s so wild to do it with your best friends,” Meg told us. “We truly are in love with each other. And to feel like we're all winning… we just feel like the luckiest people in the world.”

Mark added, ”It's so rare that people actually are close friends. I mean it's one thing to get along with one another at work, but it's quite another to make the time and take the effort and energy to see each other outside of work. And we really, really care so deeply about each other. I feel like we talk every day in our group chat. Our group chat is really cute.”

Quinta Brunson has no hard feelings toward Jimmy Kimmel

While the internet has criticized Jimmy Kimmel for distracting attention during Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech for her first Emmy award, the actress says she's not upset with the late night funny man….for now.

"I felt like the bit didn't bother me that much,” she later said backstage. “I don’t know what the Internet thinks. I know him. Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late night spot and was one of the first people to see Abbott.”

She reserved the right to be mad tomorrow—and said she will have the opportunity to confront Kimmel later this week.

“I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday,” she said. “So I might punch him in the face."
