Growing up Black in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the late 1800s, Florence Price fostered a childhood passion for piano and eventually grew up to become a classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. In 1932, she composed orchestral work "Ethiopia's Shadow in America." Following her 1953 death, much of Price's work was lost to time until 2009, when a collection of her unpublished manuscripts were discovered in her former Illinois home. Now, it prepares to make its Colorado debut as The Fort Collins Symphony plans to play the piece at its Dvořák Discovery on Feb. 3. The concert also features a unique collaboration with artist Louise Cutler, who will unveil a new painting inspired by the music at the concert.
