8 Home Items That Are Always Worth Paying Full Price For

Open your inbox or visit your favorite furniture store or site, and it seems as if there is always a sale these days. After all, who doesn’t want to save cash, especially on big-ticket items like furniture and decor? However, just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it is worth buying. On the other hand, just because a piece of furniture never goes on sale doesn’t mean it’s a waste of money. Here are five items for the home that are always worth paying full price for.

Sofas and Sectionals

If you’re thinking of investing in a high-quality sofa or sectional, don’t hesitate. Chelsea Marks, co-owner of Paynes Gray, a stylishly curated online furniture store, tells me that when it comes to big-ticket items that get a lot of wear and tear like sofas—you get what you pay for. “What you spend is going to match the quality of your purchase. If you purchase a $700 sofa, don’t expect to be happy with it three years later. I’m a big believer in purchasing quality foundation pieces. Pick something with a classic or transitional look so that in ten years it will still look of the time.”

Comfort is also a key factor when it comes to this purchase. “We spend a lot of time sitting and laying down,” says interior designer Kate Dawson. “You need pieces that will support your body. Sofas will also be used more than anything else in your home. So, make sure you get pieces that are high quality, well made, and can take a beating.”

Lastly, Dawson recommends splurging on performance fabrics because they’re more durable. This is especially good advice for those with children and pets.

Desk Chairs

There’s nothing that ruins an intense work session more than a backache or if your butt falls alseep in your chair (it happens to all of us). Dawson tells me desk chairs are always worth paying full price for. If you’re still on the fence about this, calculate the amount of time you spend sitting while you work or do other things online. When you do the math, it probably costs just pennies per day to have a comfy, supportive chair. Unlike trendy decor or other items you may want to replace more often, most of us keep our desk chairs for at least a few years.

Mattresses

If you need a new mattress and your favorite brand is just a few weeks from their semi-annual sale, go ahead and wait, but for the most part, mattresses are always worth the cost. A cheap mattress won’t do you any favors. After all, sleep is so important for your health and overall well-being—two things that are absolutely worth spending money on.

Customized Built-Ins

Home customizations are rarely inexpensive, but Dawson tells me that built-in cabinetry is a justifiable cost. “I also think custom built-ins are worth every penny. Not only does it add value to your home, it also adds character and style, while giving you storage and a place to display everything from books to personal collections, pictures, and small plants.”

While many homes feature custom cabinetry in the living room or TV room, Dawson is also a proponent of build-outs in the bedroom. “They’re especially useful in kids’ rooms where shelving is always needed. Plus it's easy to create a built-in desk that matches the bookcases perfectly. This gives children an organized and comfortable space for studying.”

Dressers

There are few furniture fiascos more frustrating than a dresser drawer that doesn’t open properly, just won't close, or worse—falls out when opened.

Unlike nightstands, dressers are utilitarian and subject to a lot of wear and tear. Needing to replace your dresser every few years because it is no longer functional ends up becoming expensive over time. So, it’s best to choose a quality piece for the long haul.

Why Some Things Never Go on Sale

If you’ve been pining for that dining table or sideboard (which are two more items Marks tells me are worth paying full price for) and wondering why they haven’t been marked down—according to Marks, some items never go on sale because there's no reason for them to. “The demand for most timeless fine furnishings will always be there. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a piece on sale due to an annual sale, overstock, or occasional closeouts. It’s the less expensive stuff that is usually more trendy, and since styles are always changing, those pieces will go on sale once trends change.”
