8 Easy Outfit Ideas to Wear For the Fourth of July

It can be hard to keep track of our calendar these days, but Fourth of July weekend has arrived. With Black Lives Matter protests continuing as we fight to dismantle racism and end police brutality, this year’s celebration may feel almost disingenuous. However, we can still celebrate the USA’s independence with some pride. Despite it all, some progress has been and continues to be made; people are listening and learning through tough conversations with family and friends, reading books, watching documentaries and films, and of course, using the powerful tool of social media. With strong conviction and hope, we are capable of prevailing, and that is definitely something we can celebrate.

Whether you’re spending the 4th at the beach or having a small, socially-distanced gathering with friends, we’ve rounded up a few patriotic outfits to help you get dressed for the holiday in 2020.

Prep For the Pool or Beach

With your bathing suit underneath, slip on a more relaxed cover-up, like a linen set that includes a button down and drawstring shorts. Opt for red, white, or blue (or all three) swimwear to stay on theme of the American flag colors. Or, better yet, go for a star print. A bucket hat to shade you from the sun will complete the look.

We like to stand out, and a bold red two-piece will do just that. Stacking on simple jewelry, such as a few gold chains and bangles, keeps the focus on the ‘fit but adds a little something. Then, you can finish things off with a pair of flats or low-heeled sandals for a slightly more casual take.

This cute romper with a collar gives off preppy vibes, not to mention is a nod to the classic 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger. While Dua Lipa’s exact look is sold out, a great alternative is a fitted onesie that will keep you dry from sweat. We’re also taking note from the singer to pair our own outfit with retro sneakers. Ice cream should also be included.

Let Your Swimsuit Double As a Top

Versatility is never to be undervalued, and a one-piece swimsuit can also work as a body suit. Pair it with lightweight pants and you’re set for shifting from the pool to the celebration. Don’t forget your easy slip-on slides.

Remind Everyone That the Fight Continues

Another way to celebrate Independence Day is to express your values and keep in mind what people around the U.S. are fighting for. There’s a lot of power in what we wear; it’s how we express ourselves and, at times, what we believe in. Yara Shahidi made a stance on Earth Day, and you can do the same on the Fourth. If you buy a shirt from an activist organization or a brand that pledges to donate proceeds, you also are helping the cause financially.

Think Pretty Puff Sleeves

The puff-sleeve trend continues and we’re not mad about it. We especially like the ones with a square neckline, reminiscent of a Renaissance-era dress. You can wear this style in a dress silhouette, or as a top paired with jeans, denim cutoffs, a pleated skirt, etc. Perhaps that versatility is why this style is here to stay.

Add a Standout Accessory

A white tee styled with denim creates a timeless outfit, and while a floppy sunhat is a great addition, it’s Candice Huffine’s red bandana that really stands out here. With this summer scarf around your neck, you’ve got yourself a festive look that’ll work for any outdoor barbecue. Looking for a less common combination? Pair this accessory with a dress or jumpsuit instead.
