This 73-Year-Old Fitness Fanatic Is Defying Expectations On Every Level At 70 years old, Joan MacDonald was on multiple medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and acid reflux. Doctors told her she would have to increase the dosages, unless she made a drastic lifestyle change. "I knew I had to do something different," MacDonald told Shape. She began going on walks, practicing yoga, and weight lifting. Since then, MacDonald has lost 62 pounds, and her doctors have given her a clean bill of health. She exercises at least five days a week. Two days are dedicated to cardio. The rest of the time MacDonald does cardio and strength training, focusing on different muscle groups each day. MacDonald says reaching her goals comes down to pure dedication and hard work. She also credits her daughter, Tulum Strength Club owner Michelle MacDonald, for her guidance and expertise.
