70-Pound German Shepherd Found 25 Feet Up a Tree in California

German Shepherds are highly intelligent, energetic, and also a huge fan of chasing games. Whether it be a car, a cat, a ball or another dog they love to run and chase things. Including squirrels.

A beautiful shepherd by the name of Luna in Lotus, California decided to chase one of those squirrels on Monday, and she ended up in a location usually favored by adventurous cats.

KCCI.com reports, "Brian Spies said he hopes his dog Luna has “learned her lesson” after he found her perched at least 25 feet up a pine tree near his home on Monday morning in Lotus, California, which is around 45 miles outside of California's capital city of Sacramento."

10-month-old Luna had been missing since Sunday morning and her owner became concerned when she didn't return.

How this agile German Shepherd was found.

KCCI reports, "We basically looked for her all day, driving around the mountain and calling for her,” he said. “We were worried that she was injured. She would be out all night in the cold so that’s why we searched until dark.”

What he didn’t think about was looking up. That’s how his friends Luka Bogdanovich and Jared Johnson spotted her in the tree the next day, around 10:30 a.m. No one ever heard a bark or whimper.

"I'm just driving down the road and look left. I'll be darned. I see something in the tree, and I went, 'Holy cow, that's the dog,'" Bogdanovich said."

How they got Luna down.

Spies, who works in construction, said he brought a 24-foot extension ladder for the rescue attempt of his beloved pup. He had to bear hug her and walk her down the ladder to safety. Spies said that Luna was tired from her adventure but was in no way injured.

Can all dogs climb trees?

It all depends on how agile the dog is and how motivated they are to climb up the tree, as in Luna's case with probably chasing a squirrel. Some dog breeds that have been known to climb trees include Jack Russell Terriers, Chihuahuas, and the Belgian Malinois.

We are so happy Luna is home safe and sound with her owner and she didn't have to spend too many days trapped in the tree. How funny is it that's where this silly pup was discovered?

I'm not exactly sure how you can keep a highly motivated dog from scaling a tree other than with positive reinforcement training and always keeping them under your control and leashed when outside, but most dog owners want their pups to be able to explore and run around their yards and get their energy out. I guess if your own dog goes missing and you just can't find them on ground level, try looking up towards the sky. They may just be found barking, errrr.. climbing up the wrong tree.
