REPAIRING IS THE NEW RESURFACING

Raise your hand if you’ve ever wanted to exfoliate your way to a clearer, smoother complexion. Now raise your hand if you overdid it. According to celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau, this year is all about repairing the skin barrier after one too many aggressive products like acid exfoliators. Hello, hydration. (Buh-bye, dry, flaky and irritated.)

Try it: Renée Rouleau Skin Recovery Lotion ($44)

RETINOL REIGNS SUPREME

Rouleau predicts that while retinol (which is pretty much the gold standard for treating everything from acne to wrinkles) was big in 2018, it’s about to get even bigger. Think beyond creams and serums and into new territory: masks, eye treatments and—fingers crossed—hand and body treatments.

Try it: Drunk Elephant A-Passioni Retinol Cream ($74)

DEWY SKIN IS IN

According to plastic surgeon Dr. Melissa Doft, our Instagram-fueled obsession with dewy skin isn’t going anywhere. “Patients want brighter, dewier skin,” she says. But this time, skip the highlighter and instead opt for brightening serums and hydrating oils that are more “lit from within” and less “disco glitter drama queen.”

AND ADULT ACNE IS ON ITS WAY OUT

Well, at least the harsh formulas from your teenage years are. Rouleau predicts that more attention will be paid to adult acne products that include gentler formulations that banish zits but won’t over-dry your skin.

Try it: Herbivore Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask ($48)

UNDERSTANDING INGREDIENTS IS KEY

That’s because, according to Dr. Doft, more and more consumers are reading labels. They’re on the lookout for efficacy, especially in the form of higher levels of active ingredients. Think vitamin C and sunscreen—SPF 50 or more, baby.

Try it: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Sunscreen Milk SPF 60 ($36)

SUPPLEMENTS ARE SKIN CARE TOO

Thanks to a wealth of resources (i.e., the internet), we now know more than ever about how to maximize our diet for wellness. Expect that self-care mind-set to roll over into the beauty realm with more vitamins and supplements tailored to skin-care goals. Some of Rouleau’s favorites? Probiotics, vitamin B and beta glucan, which all work to prevent breakouts.

Try it: The Nue Co Skin Food + Prebiotic ($75)

GOING GREEN IS NO LONGER A TRADE-OFF

Once associated only with the smell of patchouli and crunchy health food stores, clean beauty has officially gone mainstream. And dermatologist Dr. Carl Thornfeldt predicts a surge in all-natural products with instant results—so be on the lookout for clean botanical formulas that actually work.

Try it: Epionce Renewal Facial Cream ($94)
