7 Reasons Emma Roberts's Madison Montgomery Is the Most Iconic "American Horror Story" Character

American Horror Story’s third installment, Coven, stood out as a prominent chapter in the series created by Ryan Murphy. There was plenty of campy magic and horror to love about the season that followed a group of young witches in New Orleans all fighting to prove themselves as the next Supreme. Myrtle Snow’s red-iconic ode to Balenciaga while being burned at the stake was an exit for the ages. We can’t forget Taissa Farmiga’s second on-screen relationship with Evan Peters, this time a romance between a budding sorceress and a resurrected zombie made of various frat boy parts.

The homecoming of some of the season’s most hallowed characters in the *American Horror Story: Apocalypse * season has brought more than just a little noise. Fans waited with baited breath for more details about which witches, murder house survivors, and more would return for the crossover chapter. Nonetheless, when it comes to the coven of AHS, one character supremely stands out: Emma Roberts’s Madison Montgomery.

Right from the gates, Madison positioned herself as the HWIC even if she ultimately didn’t make it all the way to the end. Emma played a seemingly paralleled role in Murphy’s 2015 series Scream Queens, the sharp-tongued sorority queen bee Chanel #1. But it wasn’t enough and we can’t wait to see her comeback as Madison (and of course say those magical words, “bet you thought you’d seen the last of me”) on Wednesday night in the premiere of AHS: Apocalypse. Before the new season drops, let’s reminisce on everything that combined create the fabulous and spellbinding Madison Montgomery.

She wasn't afraid to embrace her witchy powers.

Madison didn’t shy away from using her powers early on in the game. The first episode of Coven is particularly dark, but Madison gets her revenge on some fraternity brothers that sexually assaulted her at a party with a simple flick of her wrist, flipping a bus full of the assailants. It was grisly and it was raw, and most of all, it was unexpected.

She took a bubble bath as the coven was at its most vulnerable.

After Madison was brought back to life, things weren’t quite as they were from before she was temporarily dead. She tried everything to feel literally anything again. When emotion, love, and even pain didn't do the trick, she found something that did: taking a candlelit, bubble bath. Sometimes it really is the simple things that help you appreciate life.

Died, came back to life, and slayed with some high-quality lighting.

Trying to scare off Jessica Lange, who played the reigning Supreme Fiona Goode in season 3 (and also the character who killed Madison the first time in fear that the young witch would take her crown), Madison tricked her into thinking that she’s a ghost back to haunt her. The key to coming off as a spirit out for revenge? A red dress, some flirty dance moves, and a dewy glow effect.

Before she was a witch, she was a $7 million movie star.

One of the most referenced Madison Montgomery-jokes of the season was her movie-star status. Sure, having gifts such as telekinesis and being able to light things on fire with just a little focus are great, but that hardly stacks up to having two Teen Choice Awards.

Always kept it real.

She always said what was on her mind, keeping audiences entertained.

Cemetary, but make it fashion.

A lot of scenes from Coven took place in cemeteries (duh) and Madison always treated a visit to the place of mourning as an occasion to show off her best looks. To no shock, she was always put together head-to-toe, even when she was busy trying to get rid of the competition for The Coven’s Next Top Supreme.

The one-liners forever burned into our minds.

Madison is that girl who if you cut her in line at Starbucks, she would throw a soy latte in your face while holding a next-season Gucci bag. She deftly sunk all those one-liners and incisive insults and we can’t wait to see which new ones she has for fans to immediately GIF in Apocalypse. Will anything top, “surprise bitch, bet you thought you’d seen the last of me?” We don’t know, but we can’t wait to find out.
