Ever since athleisure entered the zeitgeist, workout clothes and activewear have gotten progressively more advanced and, more importantly, significantly more stylish. Those advances have also seen a greater range of athletic apparel for a wider variety of shapes and sizes—including a lot more curve-friendly options. Here are seven brands that offer plus size gear that can stand up to even your toughest, sweatiest, hard-core workouts.
Available in sizes XS to 3X
Alala debuted its new Superbodies collection in October 2019, expanding its offering to a size 3X. This is the first time Alala has offered plus size styles, and the introductory collection includes 12 pieces. With 16 months of testing by real women and over 60 fitting sessions behind each style, we’re willing to bet these pieces aren’t just “eh, they do the trick” but are more along the lines of “these are my absolute go-to leggings.”
Available in sizes 0 to 32
Founded by supermodel Candice Huffine, DAY/WON is a new activewear brand focused on sustainability and inclusivity. There’s no separate plus-size landing page or alternative styles here, as every single item comes in sizes 0 through 32. While there are high-tech basics like black capris and simple (but supportive) sports bras, the real winners are the printed sets that you can mix and match as you please.
Avilable in sizes XS to 3X
Did you know that Shape, the women’s health and fitness magazine, had its own line of workout wear? Well, now you do. And better yet, it’s been size inclusive ever since it launched back in 2016. In addition to sports bras, capris and tech-based tees you’ll feel comfortable breaking a sweat in, there are also a number of cute athleisure styles you can wear post-gym or for just running errands around town.
Available in sizes XXS to 6XL and maternity
Girlfriend Collective is pretty unique in the fact that it’s not just invested in ethical practices, transparency, sustainability or size inclusion—but it maintains a focus on all four all at once. As for style, Girlfriend Collective is big on minimal chic, with high-quality basics in a variety of gorgeous colors. Plus, every single style goes up a size 6XL so anyone can get their sweat on in style. On the side of sustainability, Girlfriend makes all its products from recycled plastic (like water bottles and other trash) and thoroughly treats any and all water used in its dyeing processes to ensure no chemicals or other environmentally unfriendly materials end up where they shouldn't be. Want to know more? The entire process is outlined on the brand's website for all to see.
Available in sizes 00 to 40
We all know and love Universal Standard for having one of the largest size ranges of any fashion brand out there, but they only recently branched into fitness gear. There are two collections currently, GAME, which is Universal Standard’s in-house activewear range, and a collaboration with Adidas (marking the first time Adidas has offered plus sizes). Just like the rest of the brand’s offerings, both GAME and the Adidas collab contain easy, no-fuss styles you can count on to last.
Available in sizes XS to 5XL
Another brand with fantastic staples in pretty colors is Superfit Hero. Founder Micki Krimmel (a Los Angeles roller derby all-star, NBD) has said her goal is to make fitness more inclusive and empowering. With that in mind, Superfit doesn’t just offer high-tech leggings and sports bras that keep bounce to a minimum; it also has a Body Positive Fitness Finder that can help you find body-positive training facilities and workout groups to promote the message that fitness is a lifestyle—and not just for a certain body type.
Available in sizes XS to 4X
A particularly good option for the budget-conscious athlete, Old Navy is constantly releasing new, fun seasonal colors and patterns to fit any style you prefer. Seriously, it has full-length leggings, ¾-length, capris, bike shorts and running shorts so you truly have your pick of the draw. And despite the lower price range, we can attest to Old Navy’s durability (I’ve owned a pair of the leggings for three years and can report that there have been no rips, fading or thinning out of the fabric in spots where it rubs together).
