When it comes to home design, bathrooms present some of the most challenging spaces to beautify. (How do you make a small room with a toilet look nice?) A recent Houzz bathroom trends study, which surveyed nearly 2,000 homeowners regarding their recent or upcoming bathroom renovation projects, shares what survey respondents find most important when it comes to upgrading their space. Here are a few of the top emerging bathroom renovation trends from the last year to serve as inspiration for your own bathroom remodel.

Transitional Style

Nearly 9 in 10 homeowners are changing the design of their bathrooms, with the most popular style being transitional. (Think of the style as a combination of modern and traditional bathroom elements—a porcelain clawfoot tub, white and neutral-colored walls, a pedestal sink, and a glass door shower.) The blend of newer and vintage designs is very pleasing to the eye, so it's no wonder many people are opting for this bathroom aesthetic. The second and third most popular bathroom styles are contemporary and modern.

Bigger Is Better

It seems that many people are tired of feeling cramped in their bathrooms this year. According to Houzz, 22 percent of people surveyed are increasing the sizes of their primary bathrooms and have plans to expand them to 100 square feet or more. To achieve this, they are drawing from smaller spaces like closets and hallways, with some even sacrificing space from their bedrooms. Among those looking to renovate, over half reported plans to expand the size of their showers. It appears that people are really looking to curate a spacious, spa-like atmosphere.

Wood Vanities

Out with the white, in with the wood. One-third of homeowners are opting for wood-colored vanities this year, replacing white as the second most popular color choice. About 10 precent of survey respondents are sticking with gray, although its popularity has waned over the last few years.

Prioritizing Sustainability

People aren't just recycling water bottles anymore—they're making sustainable home renovation choices. Nearly 45 percent of homeowners are opting for a timeless bathroom design so they don't have to keep renovating. Additionally, more than two-thirds of people are using LED lightbulbs for their washrooms, and another third are utilizing light dimmers to conserve energy. Water and energy-conserving installations are also gaining popularity.

Ceramic and Porcelain Shower Walls and Flooring

Going hand-in-hand with the rise in popularity of transitional style, many respondents seem to be gravitating towards tile showers. The vast majority of homeowners are selecting ceramic or porcelain for their showers, with 82 percent using it for walls and 61 percent using the material for flooring. However, a little over 1 in 10 homeowners are using marble for those spaces for a more luxurious shower. Others are using quartzite, granite, and slate.

Mirror Upgrades

It's almost inevitable that a new bathroom comes with a new mirror, and statistics prove it. Nearly three-fourths of homeowners are installing new mirrors as part of their bathroom renovation projects, with 41 percent of that group installing one mirror and 51 percent installing two. Technology updates are part of what's driving the change, with 20 percent of survey respondents choosing mirrors with LED lighting and 20 percent choosing mirrors with an anti-fog functionality.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting remains the most popular style of bathroom lighting, with half of homeowners choosing this style, while ceiling lights, sconces, and shower lights follow closely behind. Recessed lighting is well-loved in bathrooms and kitchens because it looks sleek, evenly illuminates a space, and doesn't hang down like pendant lights (preventing you from knocking your head when walking through the room).
