7-Eleven is currently testing out stores that don't require cashiers. This change is meant to improve the speed and convenience of the customer experience.

As of right now, the online stores without cashiers are only in Irving, TX, as part of a pilot program. 7-Eleven also started using a mobile checkout app called Scan & Pay in select markets in 2018. When Scan & Pay came to New York City, 7-Eleven said in a press release the appeal of using the app is that customers no longer have to wait in line when the store is busy.

"More people are on the go and looking for faster, easier ways to shop than ever before. 7-Eleven continues to redefine convenience with frictionless experiences like Mobile Checkout," said a spokesperson for 7-Eleven in an August press release.

Stores without cashiers at all are another step toward an easier shopping experience. Locations in Irving, TX, where 7-Eleven has its headquarters, are testing out locations that depend exclusively on the mobile checkout app procedure. Of course, items that are age restricted, like cigarettes or lottery tickets, will still have to be monitored by an employee.

According to a Fox News report, it's unclear if there are any official plans to make more 7-Eleven locations nationwide run without cashiers. Although, it wouldn't be a total shock if more stores like this began popping up, since "cashierless" stores have become more popular since Amazon launched its Amazon Go grocery stores. Technology, man. What a world.
