It may have been couch season since, oh, March, but now it's really couch season y'all. With the arrival of a host of new holiday movies and TV specials, we plan on being plopped in front of our TVs for quite some time. The Hallmark Christmas movie schedule and Freefrom's "Kickoff to Christmas" movie lineup will certainly keep us preoccupied for a while, but let us not forget all the other amazing streaming platforms out there. Below, seven of our favorite new holiday movies and specials to add to your list.
Holiday Home Makeover with Mr. Christmas on Netflix: Watch homes undergo dramatic transformations for the winter holiday season with interior design guru Benjamin Bradley, a.k.a. Mr. Christmas, in this reality series that will leave you feeling inspired to get to work on your own decorations. Or, you know, live vicariously.
Operation Christmas Drop on Netflix: Comedy, romance, and holiday spirit abounds in this wonderful Christmas movie that centers around a political aide and an Air Force pilot, as the aide tries to squash the tropical base's Christmas Drop humanitarian mission to give supplies to those in need (the story is loosely based on the U.S. Air Force's Operation Christmas Drop program).
A Music Lover's Guide to Murdoch Mysteries on Acorn: Debuting on Christmas Eve, we'll definitely be tuning in for this Christmas special. While Acorn TV typically premieres a new season of Murdoch Mysteries on Christmas Eve, the coronavirus pandemic delayed filming this year. Now, the producers of the award-winning Canadian series are giving fans quite the experience with a seven-piece ensemble from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to perform music from the early 1900s, around the time the show takes place. The show will be hosted by the Detective William Murdoch himself (Yannick Bisson) and is sure to get you into the wintry spirit.
Happiest Season on Hulu: Landing on Hulu on November 25, this romantic comedy will leave you rolling on the floor as you watch the holiday adventures of girlfriends Abby (Kristen Stewart) and Harper (Mackenzie Davis) unfold. Heartwarming and hilarious is a combo we can get behind.
12 Dates of Christmas on HBO Max: From Sam Dean, the showrunner of the hit Netflix series, Love Is Blind, comes this new reality dating series debuting on November 26, which chronicles singles searching for love. It all kicks off at a fairy-tale castle in Austria and ends with contestants bringing someone home for the holidays and having to decide to commit or cut things off by the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Sold!
Call the Midwife Holiday Special on PBS: Head over to PBS.org or the PBS app to time travel back to 1965, when you're in for quite the unexpected Christmas with the Nonnatus House crew, complete with a circus coming to town in Poplar, London. Learn more about the details here.
Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas with Vanessa Williams on PBS: Streaming on the PBS website and app starts on December 15 for this spectacular musical collaboration with the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation. The one-hour performance showcases the American Pops Orchestra playing the entire eponymous 1960 holiday album from the one and only Ella Fitzgerald. Put on your dancing slippers.
