Common wisdom has it that Paris is the least trend-driven of the four fashion weeks — because Paris creates the trends, it doesn’t follow them, darling. So it’s a little surprising to see that this season, Parisian designers are incorporating that most mass- and retail-friendly of trends into their designs: the ’90s revival.

In some cases, the references are so straightforward and throwback, you have to do a double-take to make sure you’re not actually looking at an X-Girl catalog circa 1995 (looking at you, Courrèges). In the hands of masters like John Galliano or upstart labels like Jacquemus, basic ’90s styles like slipdresses and platform shoes become the template on which some exquisitely weird fashion experimentation occurs.
