At 65, Andie MacDowell Says This Drugstore Shampoo Is ‘Really Good’ for Gray Hair

Andie MacDowell embraced her salt-and-pepper strands during COVID-19 lockdowns, when going to the hairstylist wasn’t at the top of her to-do list. This led the star to grow out her “silver fox” natural hair, making headlines along the way. Now, the star tells Prevention exactly what she uses to achieve such gorgeous, healthy gray hair: L’Oreal Paris’ Ever Pure Purple Shampoo and Conditioner.

While leaning into her natural hair color may have started from a place of necessity, the star says her daughters, Rainey, 34, and Margaret, 29, helped her reach the decision. “During COVID it started growing out and I could see it looked good on me. My girls told me, because we saw each other a lot during COVID, they said ‘you need to do this you look badass.’ They never tell me I look badass, so I was like alright I think we should do this.”

As for what she uses to make her hair look and feel its best? “L’Oreal Paris has a really good conditioner and shampoo…the Ever Pure line,” she tells Prevention. “It’s back in my apartment in Canada. It takes the yellow out [of grays], it makes it shinier.”

The star has worked with the beauty brand for some time, now serving as an ambassador for L’Oreal Paris’ Women of Worth. “They are the kind of women I’m so in awe of,” she says of this year’s honorees. “Over the years I’ve watched [L’Oreal Paris] grow and embrace all kinds of women.” She says that she loves that has the “ability to age” with the brand.

The Maid star has become an advocate for aging herself, telling British Vogue in 2021 that she looked to real women for guidance on going gray. “I was looking at real women out there who were transitioning to grey, as well as younger women in their 50s who were choosing to go natural. You could see the before and afters, and I like the afters. But everybody has their own personal taste!”

Beyond getting gorgeous gray curls, the star has some other drugstore favorite beauty products. “I’m addicted to doing my eyebrows,” she admits. “As you get older your eyebrows thin. And I think—I feel like a face is not complete without a good eyebrow shape. I think that’s where all of your emotions and expressions come from. The movement under your eyebrows. L’Oreal has some really nice [eyebrow products.]. I go to CVS and pick them up when I need them.”

She also recommends the brand’s lash products. “I love their mascara. Their telescopic mascara—the reason I like it is it doesn’t clump. I don’t like it when eyelashes stick together. It’s very individual. It almost looks like you have on fake eyelashes if you do it just right. You’re going to have the longest eyelashes you’d ever imagine,” she says.
