From wrinkle creams to hair color, our world is full of anti-aging products that tell women that aging is not our friend. Thankfully, actress Andie MacDowell is challenging that notion one beautiful gray strand at a time.

The Maid actress has long been an advocate for embracing aging and evolving beauty. Most recently, she announced that she is proudly done with hair dye and loves her naturally stunning silver look.

The actress revealed to People that her sister’s “full-on silver” made her “jealous” because “she looked so much more beautiful” with that shade of hair. When the pandemic hit, it gave the L’Oréal Paris spokeswoman time to reassess her hair situation. “During COVID, I could see the roots with my face and with my skin and my eyes, and I liked it,” she admitted. “I felt that I would be happier. And I am happier. I really like it.”

Fans are applauding her for not conforming to any beauty standards set by society, not to mention raving about how stunning she looks by embracing her natural hair. This perspective is also allowing her to celebrate her 60s in a refreshing way. “I’m 64, and this is the time of my life,” she said in the interview. “Eventually, I’m going to be silver. And I wanted to have this experience of feeling what it is.”

Embracing her natural hair color is part of a larger effort to be more comfortable in her own skin as she ages. “Your belly gets bigger as you get older too. And I’ve had three babies,” she said.. “I’m constantly having to work on loving that part of my body. It’s so hard.”

MacDowell is also passing those life lessons on to her daughters, Rainey Qualley, 32, and Margaret Qualley, 27, teaching them to be “kinder” to themselves. In fact, they now know to keep their mother in check as well when it comes to self-love. “If I ever say anything demeaning about myself, because I’ve taught them not to do that, they’ll say, ‘Why are you doing what you told us not to do?’” MacDowell said.

Though she says it’s a “constant daily” to be kinder to herself, she’s getting more successful each day. “Aging is a really, really intimate educator on loving yourself,” she says, “because you can’t stop it. It’s going to happen” MacDowell is showing everyone how you are never past your prime and how practicing self-love can go a long way to living your best life in your 60s and beyond.

MacDowell isn’t the only celeb to lean into her natural hair color. Stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Helen Mirren, and Jane Fonda all proudly rock the hue.

We can’t wait to hear what great wisdom MacDowell drops next. Until then, catch her luscious gray locks in her latest film, Along for the Ride on Netflix.
