6-year-old Boy Uses His Disney World Savings to Help Hurricane Dorian Evacuees

As Hurricane Dorian continues to batter Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, one kid is making a difference by making a pretty big sacrifice: donating his Disney World savings.

According to WJBF, 6-year-old Jermaine Bell of Allendale, South Carolina was saving up money to take a trip to Disney World for his birthday on Sept. 8. But instead of enjoying the most magical place on Earth, the young boy is donating his money to buy food and water for Hurricane Dorian evacuees in his state.

“The people that are traveling to go to places, I wanted them to have some food to eat, so they can enjoy the ride to the place that they’re going to stay at,” Bell said to WJBF. He bought hot dogs, chips, and water for South Carolinians on the coast who were passing through his town.

According to CNN, he has helped more than 100 evacuees so far.

In order to get their attention, Bell crafted two signs that he placed by Highway 125 to let people know they can stop for a bite to eat, WJBF reported. According to CNN, the boy has been cooking since Labor Day weekend and doesn’t want to stop until the evacuees are safely home.

“I just wanted to be generous,” Bell said to CNN.

His grandmother, Aretha Grant, told CNN she couldn’t be prouder of her grandson. “We knew Jermaine was very special, but we didn't know he was special in this way to be such a giver like this,” she said.

Bell said he still hopes to go to Disney World one day. Once the crisis is over, he fully intends to celebrate his birthday.

Hurricane Dorian has not only affected states along the U.S. coast, but has also devastated parts of the Bahamas. There are lots of ways to help victims of the storm recover from the damage.
