The 6 Biggest Fall 2024 Trends From Milan Fashion Week

In recent years, Milan Fashion Week has gone from the sleepy prelude to Paris to an exhilarating display of fresh talent at storied houses — with Maximilian Davis at Ferragamo, Matthieu Blazy at Bottega Veneta and Sabato De Sarno at Gucci. Prada remains an anchor, especially with the added interest in Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons' working partnership, but even once-overlooked houses like Bally (now under Simone Belloti's creative leadership) have brought excitement to the runway.

And while it has consistently been a hotbed for the best accessories of fashion month (hello, it's Italy), it's also been highly influential when it comes to crowning seasonal apparel trends. From two inescapable colors to clothes that, like Diesel's spring collection, look like they've gone Through It, we've rounded up six of the top Fall 2024 trends from the Milan Fashion Week runways.

Mossy Greens

Italian fashion brands seem to be reconnecting with nature, based on their green-heavy Fall 2024 collections. Whereas in New York, chartreuse ruled, in Milan there's a preference for earthy moss hues — ranging from browner at MM6 Maison Margiela, Giada and Loro Piana, to lighter at Gucci, Alberta Ferretti and Bally.

Sweaters Halfway

Knitwear and fall collections just make sense together. That doesn't mean the pairing can't surprise us — or, in the case of certain shows in Milan, make us scratch our head a bit. See, the sweaters at Etro, Del Core, Sportmax and Giada seemed to either have been interrupted mid-knit (as evident by their extreme, abrupt crops and spliced-in-half look at Del Core, Sportmax and Giada) or paused halfway through biting put on (like the one-arm-in, rest-wrapped-around-the-neck styling at Etro). There's less concern with warmth-retention, and more with making your sweaters the talking point of your look.

White Fuzzies

The coziness of autumn comes through in the white fuzzy textures, both knit and furry, seen at the Fall 2024 debuts of Jil Sander, MSGM, Marni and more.

Bra Cup Dresses

We haven't seen dresses with visible, accented bra cups in a minute (we just moved past the sheer, boning-outlined styles at Dior), but they're on their way back, if the Milan Fashion Week runways — specifically, those of Ermanno Scervino, Gucci and Sportmax — have anything to do with it.

Butter Yellows

Yellow isn't a color synonymous with fall, but designers in Milan are embracing it in a typically-reserved-for-spring pastel that makes "stick of butter" dressing a breeze.

Clothes in Distress

Just like me on the third week of fashion month, select looks in the Fall 2024 collections are slowly unraveling, shown on the runway in different level of distress, from errant threads to more artful dégradés. (Glenn Martens remains the king of the latter at Diesel.)
