The 6 Best Non-Alcoholic Beers For Dry January & Beyond

Did the holiday season find you quite literally overflowing with spirits? Okay, so maybe you didn't go full "Lampshade Hat" on New Year's Eve, sloshing beer in hand, but come January 1, doing Dry (or Damp) January starts to look pretty appetizing, if not just for the money you save by not going out as much.

No matter your level of sobriety or sober curiosity, there are tons of non-alcoholic canned drinks out there to keep your hands full so you don't have to survive on club soda with lime alone. Thankfully, some the best non-alcoholic canned drinks out there are NA beers, with craft brewers putting out styles that rival their boozy counterparts. It makes total sense that non-alcoholic beers have expanded way beyond just O'Douls, especially since 2023 saw the lowest levels of beer being consumed in the U.S. in a generation and soaring sales of non-alcoholic beers.

Of course, not all of the hot new NA beers out there are worth your time, so I taste-tested my way through all the non-alcoholic cans I could get my hands on to find the ones you should stock up on (and maybe even shotgun!) for Dry January, Sober October, and beyond.

Athletic Brewing Free Wave Hazy IPA

The first time I cracked into Athletic Brewing Company's Free Wave Hazy IPA, it was 2 p.m. on a workday. Not going to lie, that first sip felt scandalous. Who was I to be drinking in the middle of work? But then I remembered, d'oh, this hoppy, soft, and hazy IPA is essentially alcohol free (less than 0.5% ABV, like kombucha).

It is truly that good, with floral, citrus hop-heavy flavor that really feels like a party in a can, but without the headache later. Really, it's not just a great NA beer; it's a great beer full stop.

Golden Road Brewing Non-Alc Mango Cart

I drank Golden Road's NA Mango Cart before I ever tried their full-alc version, and I've got to say it...I prefer the non-alcohol one. Especially refreshing if I'm hitting a baseball game or just wanting a summery, end-of-day beverage, the Golden Road NA Mango Cart is a crisp wheat-ale style beer with a bold, yet naturally juicy mango essence that gets nowhere near what I describe as "candle-adjacent." Just be sure to dress the rim of your can with plenty of Tajin for the full experience.

Guinness 0

A well-poured Guinness is a beautiful thing, and the same is true of Guinness Zero non-alcoholic draught. Made the same precise way as the classic stout, the Guinness brewers remove the alcohol from the beer after brewing via a cold filtration method that doesn't compromise the integrity of this world famously smooth and malty beer.

Personally, the Guinness Zero checked all my boxes, especially having had a few pints in Dublin myself to check it against. Creamy head? Check. Roasted, chocolate-coffee notes? You got it. More reason than ever to make a Guinness chocolate cake this St. Patrick's Day? Of course.

Brooklyn Brewery Special Effects Pils

Warning: Brooklyn Brewery's easy-drinking non-alcoholic pilsner is about to become your new favorite party trick. It's essentially the drinkable version of a disappearing act, in that you'll wonder so many things: Where did the alcohol go? How does this taste so good? Did you really just drink three of these but still feel pretty great? You'll get a buzz just off how crushably crisp this golden "pilsner" is.

Suntory All-Free

When I can find one, Japanese lagers like Suntory are always a go-to beer when I head to a bar or grab a pizza. So when I found out Suntory had rolled out there All-Free version, which is free of calories and alcohol. Ultra-light and ultra-crisp, this non-alcoholic beer has a hoppy bite that'll make it BFFs with sushi, tempura, or just simply a hot day at the beach.

Shiner Rode0 Golden Brew

Gently hoppy and crisp, the newest non-alcoholic American lager to hit the scene courtesy of Shiner is not to be missed, especially if you're less into being bowled over by IPAs. Cracking into my first can of Shiner's RodeO golden brew immediately transported me to many summer nights I've spent eating rodeo burgers at a dive bar somewhere out west (which admittedly, is a not-insubstantial amount). How often does that happen with a non-alcoholic beer? Not often enough, so be sure to grab a six pack of these next time you need to just have a solid, honest-to-goodness beer (without the full ABV).
