These 6 accessories will offer an instant wardrobe update

The prevailing trend of 2019 so far (yes, I know we are a mere 27 days in) is to wear the clothes you already have. Everyone around me has gone ‘clothes sober’, swapping dry January for no-buy January. While I’d never countenance swearing off shopping entirely, we could all do with asking ourselves how often we’d (really) wear something before buying it, or taking a little time to see the pieces we already own in a fresh way. A cleverly chosen accessory is an excellent way to do this.

I recently picked up a silk scarf striped in shades from custard to mocha in the bargain bin of a vintage shop in Paris. Et voilà, it’s now my way into doing this season’s brown look with minimal commitment.  So behold, the six accessories that  could add instant zing to your old wardrobe faithfuls...

1. The vanity-case bag. Bigger than a clutch, sweeter than a tote, Rejina Pyo is  the queen of this gorgeous handbag genre, though Staud and Cult Gaia also have  lovely offerings. The Duchess of Sussex is a fan – she carried a Victoria Beckham version for Christmas Day at Sandringham.

2. The bow mule. You may have seen everyone on Instagram touting their Gia Couture x Alex Eagle beauties, but there are plenty of options on the high street. Wear with jeans and jazzy socks.

3. The Alice band. This is the year of the hair accessory. Try a hairband for a spring wedding instead of a hat or a fascinator.

4. The resin jewellery. John Lewis & Partners has a new collection that includes lots of delectable resin pieces, but look to labels like Machete and Valet, too.

5. The souvenir belt. There’s going to be a hippy vibe this spring and a rope or trinket belt is a more realistic way of getting on board than the full fringed waistcoat.

6. The silk scarf. On the catwalk they were worn tied around the head, but for now, they’ll keep your neck both toasty and chic.
