Paulina Porizkova bared it all physically and emotionally in a new Instagram. The former supermodel posed in bed wearing underwear, an open button-down shirt, and showed off her gray hair, to vulnerably open up about her “crippling fear of abandonment” that has crept up as a result of multiple failed relationships.

“Out of sight out of mind,” the 58-year-old wrote in the post’s caption. “This is a very simplistic point of view, or, in my case, a protective measure. When a loved one physically closes the door physically, I do the same emotionally. The pain of missing someone is so traumatic to me, my subconscious has decided it can’t allow it.”

She went on to explain that those who have read her recently released book, No Filter, will not be strangers to the fact that “childhood trauma coupled with reinforcing events has left me with an almost crippling fear of abandonment,” she wrote.

To provide context, as detailed in a separate post, Porizkova has experienced tremendous loss over the last five years. Her husband, Ric Ocasek, died four years ago after living with lung cancer, and before his death, he disinherited her from his will. At the time, they had separated and planned to divorce because she had “fallen in love with someone else,” she wrote, who then left her while she was “drowning in grief” for her late husband. “Oh, and COVID was raging,” she concluded.

Needless to say, those events plus a lifetime of others have culminated in what Porizkova is working through today. The insecurity of being left behind is especially fresh given her new relationship with boyfriend and TV writer Jeff Greenstein.

“I have been working very hard on trying to correct something that may have protected me in the past, but now has outgrown its usefulness—and is instead a burden,” she explained. “It’s a work in progress. I’m still trying to let it sink in that when someone leaves, it may not be forever, and it’s not because I wasn’t worth their love. What really helps is the support of people I love. Steady and gentle reassurance. The willingness to sit with my needs. Patience. It’s also teaching me to return the favor. Thank you my darling @sjeffgreenstein for being there.”

Fans and followers thanked Porizkova for her honesty and many related to her words. “This is beautiful @paulinaporizkov and resonates with many of us,” one person commented. “This kind of healing feels like time travel to me - it’s listening to the terrified child who carried protective habits into adulthood,” another added. “This right here is why I love you, Paulina. It’s your willingness to be vulnerable and real about yourself,” someone else wrote.

If there’s one thing Porizkova’s good at, it’s not holding back. And it’s what continues to make her refreshing perspective one we revisit time, and time again.
