Historically, the fashion industry has been a fickle friend to the black community. Even as the industry borrows freely from the culture's distinctive sounds and styles, strategically aligning itself with key figures in the community to capitalize on a more recent demand for surface-level diversity, black faces remain conspicuously absent from the boardrooms where decisions are made and the design studios where fashion comes to life.

Over the last few years, cries for a long-overdue assessment of the industry's inability to make significant inroads in embracing diversity have reached a fever pitch, with tensions boiling over after a recent slew of mortifying, racially-tinged gaffes. A lot of (very public) handwringing followed. New initiatives were announced. Committees were convened. But not much is different. The fundamental structure of the fashion industry has stayed the same and systemic change on a broader level remains elusive. Put bluntly: The fashion industry has wantonly plundered from black culture with little regard for the community it depends on and no intention of repaying the debt.

If you consider yourself an active cog in the fashion machine (hell, if you're under 35 and wear any clothing at all), how you dress has been indelibly informed by black culture. The black man is the single most influential force in fashion today, and has been for years. George Floyd, the black man pinned down and effectively allowed to die on the streets of Minneapolis, is but one in a long line of black men tormented, abused, and murdered by a police force, in conjunction with a system perverted by deeply-ingrained racial prejudices, that refuses to acknowledge the black man's humanity, his very right to live. The fashion industry, in blindly co-opting the black man's cool, in following him in stores and discrediting his opinions, in flouting his right to the fruits of that very influence, is a far less visible villain but is no less culpable in the stifling of his voice and the erasure of his impact.

This list, which will be updated regularly, is not exhaustive. It is, however, a starting point for those looking to support black-owned businesses fighting for the recognition they deserve from an industry loathe to give it to them. It represents a microcosm of a much larger ecosystem that would benefit greatly from your contributions, now more than ever before. Black lives matter. So do your dollars. If you can spare a few, consider parting with them to support the businesses that need it most.

A huge hat tip to the many roundups we referenced to put together this far-from-comprehensive guide. For a list of what else you can do, and what organizations you can donate to, check out our guides here and here.

One of the best parts about writing about menswear is getting to familiarize myself with all the dope menswear brands out there. Obviously, there are thousands—everything from accessories to footwear to outerwear to basics has its own niche, and within all of those niches are fantastic Black-owned business to shop from and support.

Historically, the fashion industry has been a fickle friend to the Black community. Despite Black culture and designs propelling trend after trend for generations, from the highest echelons of fashion to the newest, trendiest styles you're seeing on your TikTok For You Page, institutionalized racism within the fashion community hasn't allowed Black designers to have the same recognition as their non-Black counterparts. This list of Black-owned menswear businesses, which we'll continue to update, is not exhaustive. It is, however, a starting point for those looking to support Black-owned and Black-led brands, and, in the process, add some really damn great styles to their own wardrobes.

No matter what your personal style is, there are some excellent brands below to familiarize yourself with. Celebrity-led labels ranging from Paper Planes to Members of the Rage offer dope, contemporary streetwear looks, while menswear icons like Blackstock & Weber, Brother Vellies, and Vinny's are producing timeless, high-quality wardrobe staples. Whether you want to dress it up or dress it down, keep scrolling for 87 of the best Black-owned brands out there.
