WATCH: 5 Western Movies To Watch On Netflix This Summer

This weekend, why not give yourself a break and make no plans at all? Need an excuse? We’ve got one for you: Netflix is showing some of the best Western movies ever made and you simply need to sit on your couch and watch them all. Here are five of our favorites.

Hell or High Water

This 2016 film starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster should be on everyone’s watch list. After all, it does have a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating. The film follows two brothers, Toby and Tanner, as they plan a series of bank robberies against the very institution that is about to forclose on their family ranch. But, one thing may get in their way; Marcus, a Texas Ranger just a few days shy of retirement.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs may not be for everyone, as the Coen Brothers certainly put their own spin on “Old West.” But, the anthology-style movie comes with six separate stories set in the Old West, meaning you’re bound to find at least one story and one character to enjoy. The series includes bank robbers, shootouts, and one beautiful song by a singing cowboy that is not to be missed.

The Wild Bunch

The 1969 Western by Sam Peckinpah was first made famous as everyone thought it was too violent for a movie. Though by today’s standards it could downright be considered a family flick, it stands the test of time for its storytelling. The movie follows an aging group of cowboy outlaws as they attempt one more heist in the Old West. It has gun battles, bank robberies, a lot of blood, and enough grit to last a lifetime.

The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight is another high-voltage and unique take on the Western genre. Though really, its uniqueness shouldn’t be that surprising considering it was directed by none other than Quentin Tarantino. The film follows eight strangers who happen upon one another as they take shelter during a blizzard. But, with little trust between them, the guns come out and the body count gets a little high.

The Highwaymen

Though the Highwaymen is set in the 1930s, making it a touch too late to be considered a true Old Western classic, it is both a Netflix original and a fantastic film, hence why it earned a place on this list. The film follows two Texas Rangers who come out of retirement to track and kill Bonnie and Clyde. The crime drama is based on real events so get ready to jump out of your chair a time or two as you watch.
