In 2014, we asked chefs to tell us what foods we'd be talking about in five years. Here's what they predicted.

2010 F&W Best New Chef James Syhabout believed that shrimp paste, the Southeast-Asian spread made with fermented ground shrimp, would work its way out of Thai kitchens and into the mainstream. "People will realize how enjoyable the funk is that comes along with shrimp paste's deliciousness," he said.

And he was right. Here are five shrimp paste recipes that showcase the now-mainstream staple.

  1. Shrimp Pad Thai: There's three times the shrimp in this perfect pad Thai: The recipe calls for head-on fresh shrimp, fried dried shrimp, and shrimp paste.

  2. Pork Satay: Chef Bryant Ng's version of pork satay is perfectly balanced and deliciously aromatic.

  3. Shrimp Toast: Chef Lucas sin combines calamari and shrimp to top these toasts inspired by the classic Chinese dim sum snack.

  4. Cream of Carrot Soup with Ginger and Curry: Chef Andrew Zimmern adds Thai flavors like shrimp paste and makrut lime to his creamy carrot soup for a super-satisfying dish.

  5. Fried Rice: Quick, simple, but deliciously complex, this Indonesian fried rice is seasoned with a spice paste that includes Kashmiri peppers, garlic, shallots, and shrimp paste.
