From Good Housekeeping

There's one thing you need every Thanksgiving — and that's a big, juicy turkey for your table (unless you're a vegetarian, that is). Those hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year know exactly how much time and planning it takes to cook this grand annual spread — and also how expensive it can get to host. Thankfully, many supermarkets offer free turkeys for Thanksgiving (or discounted!) ahead of the holiday to get customers to buy all the fixings at their stores.

Obviously not every chain offers them, so you'll need to search for the best deals. Lucky for us, savings experts like The Krazy Coupon Lady and The Penny Hoarder have shared the ins and outs of how to get a free turkey for Thanksgiving using rewards programs or past purchases. Even when these turkeys aren't 100 percent free, there are stores offering wildly low prices on turkeys and other Thanksgiving staples.

These deals below detail what was advertised in previous years (we'll update further as more information is released), so be sure to check back (and also in with your local store closer to November 28) for the latest offers. And just a heads up: If you're expecting an entire house full of guests, a free turkey might not be enough to feed 'em all. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend that you allow one pound of turkey per person.

Acme

In past years, spending $100 in a single transaction at Acme got you a free 10- to 14-pound turkey. You needed to print out the coupon or present the one found in their weekly advertisements.

Albertsons

Last year, Albertsons offered a coupon for a Signature Farms whole turkey at 77 cents per pound. They also gave away Honeysuckle white whole turkeys for just 97 cents per pound. Similar to Albertsons, stores like Kroger, Publix, Target, and more have offered turkeys for less than $1 per pound.

BJ's Wholesale Club

If you're a member of BJ's wholesale club, you may be able snag a free Butterball turkey. Last year, the store ran a promotion where they gave away a free turkey up to $25 in value when you purchased three qualifying items.

Fareway

Look out for deals at this grocery store, last year the offered a a free 14-pound Fareway Basted Turkey to costumers that spent $50 at the market’s meat counter.

Foodtown

Good news loyal costumers: Last year, Foodtown offered a free turkey or Cook’s ham shank to those who had spent more than $400 that year before Thanksgiving day,

Giant

Keep an eye out for Giant’s weekly circular in November. Last year, Bonus Card holders could swap out their 400 extra reward points for a free Giant brand turkey.

HEB

Last year, the Texas chain offered a 12-lb. turkey when the costumer also purchased a HEB spiral sliced bone-in half or whole ham or HEB boneless spiraled sliced ham.

Hy-Vee

The store typically offers a free Honeysuckle turkey with your purchase of a Hormel Cure 81 ham.

Safeway

Club Card members should expect a free turkey with a $150 purchase from November 1 through Thanksgiving. Check out this guide to understand their Just for U coupon policy.

ShopRite

Those with a Price Plus club card (available free of charge) can earn points leading up to Thanksgiving Day. Once you’ve spent a specific amount, which varies by location, you could earn a free turkey, ham, turkey breast, kosher chicken, lasagna or Tofurky.

Weis

According to the The Penny Hoarder, you can get a free turkey if you acquire 400 points. Keep in mind, however, that you get one point for every dollar you spend, Weis’s system is best for those who regularly shop there. Last year, you had from October 4 to Thanksgiving Day to rack up your points. But if you end up with just 100 points, here’s what you can score deals on:

  • Take 25 cents per pound off of a Weis brand frozen turkey or smoked ham portions

  • Take 49 cents per pound off of a Butterball frozen turkey or frozen turkey breast

  • Take 99 cents per pound off of a John F. Martin Boneless Ham, Weis Quality Spiral Ham, or Stouffer’s Party Lasagna

WinCo

At some WinCo locations last year, shoppers took home a free frozen Grade A turkey after spending $100.
