If you have “champagne taste on a beer budget,” you’ll be happy to know you don’t have to spend a lot to make your home look fancy. In fact, one of the biggest and best TikTok trends in the design world is sharing hacks for making your home look more expensive for less. (Cheers to that!)
Some TikTok creators and interior decorators suggest painting a dark accent wall, updating cabinet hardware, adding brass and marble accents or hanging large art pieces on your walls. However, one of the easiest ways to immediately upgrade any space is to limit clutter. Getting organized and hiding things gives you a clean space to work with — and it won’t cost you a thing.
However, if you’ve already done that, here are a few more items you can get for your home to make it look like a million bucks. P.S.: Many of these hacks are renter-friendly!
1. KANESIKI Wireless Picture Light, $39.99
If you already have art in your home that you love, one way to take it to the next level is to add a light above it. TikTok user @isabellasloft suggests adding these 17-inch wireless, rechargeable lights from Amazon above mirrors, large canvases and gallery walls. It has a switch on the side for easily turning it on and off when you want to add a little extra ambient lighting.
2. SZOKLED Wireless Under Cabinet Lighting,4-Pack, $40.99
Lighting is big when it comes to making your home look more expensive. TikTok user @beingtheblooms swears by these rechargeable under-cabinet lights. They feature a peel-and-stick magnet that you apply under the cabinet. Then, stick your light to the magnet, and when you need to recharge, simply remove the light. A single charge should last you about 10 to 12 hours. These lights also come with a remote control and a built-in timer for turning them on and off.
Pro tip: You could also place these lights under your bed or in your closet for extra lighting.
3. Room/Dividers/Now Ceiling Curtain Track Set, $99.99
Hanging your curtains closer to the ceiling is a great way to make any room look taller. However, hanging your curtains from the actual ceiling will make it look more expensive, too. TikTok user @the_avantgarde recommends installing curtains on a ceiling track about 4 inches away from the wall for a more seamless look. 4. The Sill Large Fiddle Leaf Plant, $118
Plants can help brighten up any room. However, big plants take up more space and look more expensive — often because they are. If you want a big plant for less, check out the online plant store The Sill, where you can find a real large Fiddle Leaf plant for $118. It comes in a 10-inch grow pot and stands 50 to 54 inches tall. The site also offers tips for keeping your plant alive, like getting a moisture meter to learn when to water your plant so you don’t kill it and waste your money after a few months.
You can even take your plant up a notch by adding uplighting. TikTok user @the_avantgarde suggests placing the rechargeable and color-changing Philips Hue Go from Amazon into the base of your plant.
5. Coffee Table Books, $6.99 – $69.99
Almost every TikTok user that shows off their living room has designer coffee table books, which are pretty expensive. However, you can find many of those books, from Louis Vuitton to Yves Saint Laurent, on sale at T.J.Maxx — and you can order them online.
If the prices are still too high for your budget, you can also order sets of faux books on Etsy with pretty covers. You weren’t really going to read them anyway, were you?
