Undoubtedly, tile is a versatile material that can transform and elevate the look of kitchens and baths, as well as living spaces, mantles, and mudrooms. But just like paint colors, tile designs go in and out of style and can ultimately date a space.

If you’re planning to re-tile part of your home in the coming months, consider the following insight professional designers have on what will be in vogue in 2024—and have staying power.

Terrific Terrazzo

The last decade has seen a revival of terrazzo in the traditional sense but also in modern reinterpretations that add another dimension from giant and unconventionally colored flecks to intriguing material juxtapositions. And it looks like the trend isn’t dying down anytime soon.

Laurence Carr, founder and CEO of Laurence Carr, explains how Terrazzo tiles create a classic and timeless look which is why they're making a big comeback. Terrazzo tiles can often be made from a mixture of marble chips and cement, she says.

“Terrazzo made a spirited appearance at this year’s Cersaie, exhibiting a delightful vitality,” Cristina Stivala, creative director of Taller KEN, says. One of the biggest international tile fairs in the world, Italy’s Cersaie is often thought of as an indicator of tile trends to come.

“Throughout the fair, terrazzo flaunted its charm in a palette of nostalgic hues and earthy tones, while also daringly branching out into fresh and vibrant color variations, some of which sparkled with playful exuberance," Stivala says.

These atypical colors range from pastels and primaries to metallic, and the flecks can be massive with exaggerated asymmetry.

Max Sustainability

Carr says that due to sustainability becoming increasingly important to consumers, more manufacturers are offering sustainable options like tiles made from recycled materials or tiles produced along with third-party certifications.

Sustainability has been around for a long time, but manufacturers are finding innovative or underused ways to apply it. Stivala elaborates further citing that there are manufacturers implementing sustainability into every aspect of their operations, from the firing process to transportation.

“They minimize material usage, make tiles that are entirely recyclable, and even use glueless packaging," Stivala says.

Handcrafted Look

Handcrafted, artisanal tiles that flaunt imperfection continue to gain popularity, especially within traditional go-to tiles such as the subway.

Subway tile will always be around, but we’re seeing a creative influx of hand-pressed looks in varying sizes, colors, and shapes of the classic tile,” says Jennifer Verruto, founder and CEO of Blythe Interiors. “People are getting more playful with layouts whether it be a vertical stack offset, a double herringbone, or basketweave. Our clients are still loving the classic yet elevated look.”

Carr concurs, recalling a tile collection she saw with uneven finishing touches inspired by the look and feel of melted candle wax. Velvety smooth with subtle veins, it’s in the same company as many plaster-mimicking tiles today that exude individuality and that made-by-hand quality.

One can deduce that the Zellige tile is still in for this same reason. “Handcrafted, glazed, and fired, each Zellige tile has its own unique quality," says Verruto. "Varying thickness, shape, and glaze only adds to the perfectly imperfect vibe of this tile."

Return to Color

Although monochromatic and minimal designs were popular a few years ago due to many people craving peaceful and visually calming spaces, we can expect to see bolder colors this upcoming year, Verruto says.

“Color-drenching, rich textures, and invigorating patterns are taking center stage," he says. "But while bold design choices are being made, they’re still being balanced with simplicity and a dose of minimalism that creates harmonious and exciting spaces.”

Patterned Tiles and Tiled Patterns

And speaking of patterns, geometric and nature-inspired tiles are in favor. The geometric pattern has always been at the forefront, but it’s getting more creative: Some present hand-drawn, painterly, or graphic color-filled polygons such as those used in Islamic geometry.

“Whether it's intricate Mediterranean patterns or Moroccan-inspired designs, patterned tiles infuse character and charm into a space,” says Verruto.

Some have pattern reliefs that offer more subtlety, tactility, and depth, while other tiles are individual simple shapes that, when combined with others, compose an intriguing mural. Regarding the latter, Carr explains that geometric titles add some personality and style to any space.

“Abstract shapes, made with hexagons, circles, and squiggles are creating complex and unique designs that are perfect for both floors and walls," Carr says. Carr goes on says that nature prints that feature plants, animals, or landscapes in a bold and exaggerated way are also rising in popularity.

“The year 2023 witnessed a spirited fascination with the abstract canvases of stone and granite,” says Stivala. “However, as we gaze into 2024, it becomes apparent that we are poised to embark on a journey where novel patterns shall intertwine with tantalizing textures.”
