5 things to do this weekend: Marigold Festival, Rap City concert, Snake Day and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of May 10-12.

Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

Winterville Marigold Festival

  • WHERE: Pittard Park (115 Parkview Road in Winterville)

  • WHEN: Saturday, May 11 from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: This all-day arts and music festival begins with an early morning 10K race, followed by the opening of the vendor market at 9 a.m., parade at 10 a.m., kids activities and car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and live music from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Rap City Showcase

  • WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)

  • WHEN: Friday, May 10 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: HBN Entertainment's Rap City showcases represent the cutting edge of what's happening in the Athens hip hop scene. Hosted by Motorhead 2X, this concert will feature performances by Quezzy Poet, Helluva Swagg, Miles Stone, Narlie Wilson, Prince Akeem, Easylife x Astro, 2hoes1bubba and many more.

Snake Day

  • WHERE: Sandy Creek Nature Center (205 Old Commerce Rd.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, May 11 from noon to 4 p.m. ($5 admission; free for kids under 3 years of age)

  • DETAILS: Sandy Creek's Snake Day is a yearly event that celebrates the reptile and amphibian residents of the Nature Center. In addition to the opportunity to meet and interact with live snakes and a variety of other creatures, guests can enjoy games, activities and crafts while learning about the various species.

'It Did Happen Here' author event

  • WHERE: Avid Bookshop (1662 S. Lumpkin St.)

  • WHEN: Friday, May 10 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: Portland, Oregon-based authors Mic Crenshaw and Moe Bowstern are scheduled for an in-store appearance and signing event to celebrate the release of their book, "It Did Happen Here: An Antifascist People's History," which chronicles the Pacific Northwestern city's response to a fatal hate crime in 1988.

Lyndon House Art Mart

  • WHERE: Lyndon House Arts Center (211 Hoyt St.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: One of the few Athens markets that takes place indoors in the air conditioning, the Lyndon House's Art Mart is an ideal place to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts and home decorations while meeting some of the city's most talented painters, printmakers, potters, photographers, woodworkers, jewelry makers and more.
