5 things to do this weekend: 'Linnentown: The Musical,' Sweet Honey in the Rock and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Apr. 12-14.

'Linnentown: The Musical'

  • WHEN: Friday, Apr. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 14 at 3 p.m. ($15-$35 admission)

  • DETAILS: Based on first-hand accounts of the historic Black community in Athens, "Linnentown: The Musical" was written by "Giving Voice to Linnentown" author Hattie Thomas Whitehead with music and lyrics by Allen Cook. Sweet Honey in the Rock

  • WHERE: University of Georgia Performing Arts Center (250 River Rd.)

  • WHEN: Friday, Apr. 12 at 7:30 p.m. ($40-$60 admission)

  • DETAILS: With a history that dates back over four decades, this women-led vocal ensemble has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for their signature mix of genres including a cappella, gospel, folk, hip hop, jazz and R&B accompanied by upright bass. Family Day: Oceans and Coral Reefs

  • WHERE: Richard B. Russell Jr. Special Collections Libraries Building (300 S Hull St.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library invites the public to check out their newest exhibit, "Sunken Treasure: The Art and Science of Coral Reefs." Guests can create crafts and view specimens from the Georgia Museum of Natural History. Free parking for off-campus visitors is available in the Hull Street Deck.

'Cyrano'

  • WHERE: Town & Gown Players (115 Grady Ave.)

  • WHEN: April 12-14 and April 18-12 ($20 admission)

  • DETAILS: Based on Edmond Rostand's 1897 French play "Cyrano de Bergerac," this funny and fast-paced 2016 adaptation by Michael Hollinger and Aaron Posner is set in 1920s America. SoBrewCo Spring Maker’s Market

  • WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Industrial Blvd.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 13 and Sunday, Apr. 14 from noon to 7 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: Southern Brewing Company's annual spring market features locally-made arts and crafts, food and activities. Saturday will feature the Athens Pets Adoption Event with eats provided by the Café Racer Food Truck, and Sunday will feature Trivia with Bad Dog Entertainment and food from On the Run Mobile Kitchen.
