5 things to do this weekend: International Street Fest, Classic City Rollergirls and more
Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Apr. 5-7.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
UGA International Street Festival
WHERE: College Avenue (Downtown Athens)
WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 6 from noon to 5 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: This year marks the 25-year anniversary of the University of Georgia's International Street Festival, a family-friendly event designed to promote cultural awareness in the Athens community. Expect lots of dancing, live music, food from around the world, activities and more.
Classic City Rollergirls
WHERE: Fun Galaxy Athens (3030 Cherokee Rd.)
WHEN: Sunday, Apr. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ($12 admission)
DETAILS: To kick off their 2024 season, the Classic City Rollergirls' first bout will be their time-honored "Green vs. Black" game, a scrimmage that splits the team in half and sees them face off against one another. Seating is limited, so attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs. Tickets: classiccityrollergirls.square.site.
Empress Mokah EP Release
WHERE: Hendershot's (237 Prince Ave.)
WHEN: Sunday, Apr. 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ($10 admission)
DETAILS: Empress Mokah, better known to Athens locals as Mokah Jasmine Johnson, will show off her musical side at this release party for her "Love & Justice" EP. Originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica, Johnson's sound is a unique and soulful blend of genres including dancehall, R&B, reggae and spoken word.
HauntFest
WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Ind. Blvd.)
WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 6 from 4:30 p.m. to midnight and Sunday, Apr. 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. ($20 admission)
DETAILS: Back for its second year, HauntFest is a halfway-to-Halloween event that includes spooky attractions, live music, costumes and more than 70 vendor booths. This year's show will feature celebrity guest Ari Lehman, who played Jason in the original "Friday the 13th." Tickets: mrh80504.wixsite.com/haunt-fest.
Creature Comforts 10th Anniversary
WHERE: Creature Comforts Downtown Taproom and Brewery (271 W Hancock Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 6 from noon to 11 p.m. ($25 admission)
DETAILS: In celebration of their 10-year anniversary, Creature Comforts is throwing an all-day party featuring live music, food trucks and an art market featuring works by more than a dozen local artists. Wristbands will be available on-site or in advance at shop.oznr.com/merchants/creaturecomforts/ml/creaturecomforts.
