"We should team up and do each other’s revenge," Camila Mendes says in the trailer for the aptly-titled Do Revenge. And that basically sums up the plot! The Netflix dark teen comedy is about two high schoolers—Drea (Camila) and Eleanor (Maya Hawke)—who have been wronged by their classmates and join forces to get revenge on them.

(If you think the title sounds a little awkward...you're not alone. As Maya's character says in the trailer, "Is 'do revenge' even the correct grammar?" Drea shoots back, "Oh, I’m sorry, School House Rock, are you dragging my sentence structure right now?")

You'll have to watch the movie to see just how far their vengeance plots go, but for now, get to know more about the movie including who else stars, when it premieres, and which classic film inspired the plot.

What is Netflix's Do Revenge about?

In Do Revenge, Drea is looking to get revenge on her boyfriend, who leaked a nude video of her. Meanwhile, Eleanor was wronged by a student who spread a rumor that she "tried to hold her down and kiss her." The two come together to take down their enemies with plots that involve makeovers, infiltrating friend groups, and possibly murder? As Drea says in the trailer "No, I'm not fucking serious!" about that idea, but it's hard to tell just *how* dark things will get against the pastel-colored backdrop of the film.

Who is making Do Revenge?

Do Revenge is directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson along with co-writer Celeste Ballard. Jennifer is known for creating the MTV series Sweet/Vicious and writing and directing the Netflix rom-com Someone Great. She also recently co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder with Taika Waititi.

"I think there are different points where everyone’s the villain and everyone’s the hero in this story,” Jennifer told Elle in a recent interview. “And that is so much of what growing up is. I wanted to make something that paints with all the colors of adolescence.”

What influenced Do Revenge's plot?

Do Revenge is inspired by the Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. The 1951 film is about a man who meets a psychopath on a train who tries to convince him that they should, essentially, "trade" murders in order to get rid of the people they no longer want in their lives. (Do Revenge was initially titled Strangers.)

In the interview with Elle, Jennifer explained that she wanted to make a high school movie with her own twist. "We backwards-engineered this story of revenge off of: What would it be like to take the fun, thrillery stakes of a Hitchcock movie and put it in high school?"

Who stars in Do Revenge?

In addition to Camila and Maya, Do Revenge features Austin Abrams as Drea's boyfriend Max, and Ava Capri as Eleanor's rival Carissa. Sophie Turner, Alisha Boe, Eliza Bennett, Paris Berelc, Jonathan Davis, Maia Reficco, Rish Shah, and Talia Ryder round out the cast.

When will Do Revenge be released?

Do Revenge hits Netflix on September 16, 2022. Prepare yourself for scheming, extremely colorful outfits, and—as Drea puts it—a splash of "Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction energy."
