5 Things You Didn’t Know About Olivia Colman

At one point or another, you’ve probably fallen in love with Olivia Colman. Whether she’s playing Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s evil godmother on Fleabag, embodying the groaning, gout-ridden Queen Anne in The Favourite, or getting buried in a ball pit on Peep Show, Colman has an uncanny knack for stealing the show.

On the heels of her Oscar and BAFTA wins, Colman’s career shows no sign of slowing down as she’s set to take over Claire Foy’s role as Queen Elizabeth II on the upcoming season of The Crown. Below, find five things you didn’t know about the English national treasure.

  1. Colman got her first taste of regional fame starring as “Bev” in a commercial for AA car loans. Colman has since called the ad “the bane of my life.”

  2. Colman eschewed weight-gain prosthetics for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite, calling the process of putting on 35 pounds “quite fun”. The actress won an Oscar for her portrayal of the monarch in February.

  3. Colman and her husband of 18 years, Ed Sinclair, became acquainted when they were both cast in a University of Cambridge production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners. “It sounds really odd, but I did fall in love with him at first sight,” she told the Telegraph in 2013.

  4. She prefers being home with tea to glitzy award shows: Every bit the proper Brit, Colman confessed to the Guardian that after her 2019 BAFTA win, she turned to her husband and whispered, “Can we go home? I want to put my socks on and have a cup of tea.” The couple was home by 10 p.m.

  5. Colman’s dog is extremely fancy: The beloved pup’s name is Alfred, Lord Waggyson, a Tennyson reference that essentially auto-qualifies him for a knighthood.
