5 Skincare Secrets Salma Hayek Swears By To Make 53 Look Like 33

From Women's Health

Like grandmother, like granddaughter, Salma Hayek isn’t swayed by beauty trends. “I think that my beauty routine, and how I see beauty is from what I've learned from my grandmother,” she told Glamour in 2015. Instead of reaching for the hottest new products just because, Salma’s stuck to her grandmother’s advice and familiarized herself with her skin’s needs despite what everyone else is doing. The actress and producer certainly made the right move.

Now, just because you didn't have Salma’s grandmother as your personal skincare-guide, doesn’t mean it’s too late for you. In fact, Salma’s been sharing the wealth for years. Study up on the five ways Salma keeps her skin looking super-radiant.

Washing her face in the morning is not a must

“I never cleanse my skin in the morning. My grandmother taught me that at night, your skin replenishes all the things you lost during the day. Also, if I cleanse very well at night, why would it be dirty when I wake up?” Salma told The New York Times.

Might seem unconventional, but Salma’s sticking to it. Instead of washing anything away with vigorous lathering, the Like A Boss star will simply spritz a little rose water on her face to wake her skin up. It’s a gentler alternative to an a.m. cleanser, she adds. Plus, it's packing anti-aging benefits, the antioxidants inside can give your skin's health a major boost, and it can help ward off inflammation, Women's Health previously reported.

…but moisturizing is.

Sometimes, Salma will skip the rose water altogether and dive straight into her moisturizing regimen, she told Glamour. “You have to see how the skin feels every day.”

Rose water or not, moisturizing is an everyday occurrence for which Salma will typically turn to “a mix of serums and oils depending on my skin that day,” she told NYT. Her go-to oil was one from her own skincare line, Nuance, which launched in partnership with CVS in 2011. As for serums, she revealed she’s a fan of the Biologique Recherche Grand Millésime and Sérum Précieux by Anne Semonin.

Coconut oil is her makeup remover of choice.

Salma’s nighttime routine is where things get a little more intricate. Don’t get her wrong, even after the sun goes down, she’s still a firm believer in less is more. But, since your skin is “going to repair itself” as you sleep, she focuses on cleaning it thoroughly and letting her body do the rest, according to Glamour.

How? Well, her routine starts with coconut oil, which Salma uses to remove her makeup. Next, she’ll warm up a wet towel in the microwave, spray it with rose water, and rest that on her face to target any residue she might have missed.

She likes options when it comes to P.M. cleansing.

Once Salma steams her pores with a hot towel, she's ready to cleanse with cold water. She’ll either use a cleanser from Nuance, an edible hibiscus mask she created in partnership with Juice Generation, or, in a nod to her grandmother's homemade skincare products, Salma will make one from scratch using “a little bit of oatmeal and then some water or almond milk, and a little bit of honey. You let it soak, and it’s a great cleanser that makes your skin very soft,” she told NYT.

She exfoliates sparingly.

“Exfoliating a lot may make you look good in the short term, but not I think in the long term,” Salma told NYT. And she’s right. Over-exfoliation can damage the skin leaving it raw and flaky, WH previously reported. But when you keep it down to once or twice per week, sloughing dead cells from the top layer of your skin with exfoliants can “brighten your complexion, and lets your skin-care products penetrate deeper into your skin (making them work better).” When she’s not exfoliating, Salma will stick to her go-to oils and serums she knows are safe for daily use.
