5 questions I’m asking daycare centers as an antiracist mama

As parents, we’re entrusted with the monumental responsibility of nurturing our children’s understanding of the world around them. As an antiracist mama, my commitment to raising socially conscious and empathetic individuals is a central aspect of my parenting journey. As a working mom, I rely on my village of family, friends and daycare to help shape my child and their view of the world around them.

Here are five crucial questions I’m asking my daycare to ensure my child’s environment is one that promotes inclusivity, diversity and a genuine understanding of being an antiracist learner.

Questions to ask a daycare provider

1. Do you have any teachers of the global majority working with your learners? (not just at the front desk or in entry-level administrative roles.)

Representation matters deeply in the early years. I want my child to be exposed to educators who reflect the diversity of the world we live in. Having teachers from different backgrounds and cultures provides my child with role models they can relate to, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging them to pursue their own aspirations.

2. Do you have diverse books, toys and activities included in your daily curriculum and classroom environment? Will my child see themselves and others in your classroom?

Children learn by seeing, experiencing and interacting. Diverse books, toys and activities not only broaden their horizons but also creates a brave space for them to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. An inclusive classroom environment teaches my child that every voice matters and that our differences are to be celebrated. Learning about different cultures and seeing themselves in their classroom helps to affirm their identity and appreciate the cultures of others.

3. How do you guide learners through noticing differences and recognizing different skin tones, hair textures, abilities, body types, families, etc.?

Curiosity is a natural part of childhood. I believe in fostering open conversations about the diversity that surrounds us. By guiding children through conversations about differences and similarities, my child will learn the difference between curiosity and prejudice. It also creates a space for them to be brave and embrace curiosity about different cultures and people.

4. How diverse is your school’s population? Will my child have others around that look like them?

Inclusion extends beyond the materials in the classroom; it encompasses the community as well. A diverse school population enables my child to interact with peers from various backgrounds, fostering friendships based on shared experiences and mutual understanding.

5. How are caregivers notified of incidents that happen? How do you handle conflict between caregivers, educators and students?

Conflict is an inevitable part of any environment. As a parent, I want to know how incidents are handled and conflicts are resolved. Open communication ensures that caregivers, educators and students are held accountable for their actions and that a safe and supportive environment is maintained. Knowing how a daycare handles conflict, especially involving race or bias can help you navigate the conversations you have.

As an antiracist mama, my goal is to provide my child with the tools they need to navigate the world with empathy, curiosity and a deep understanding of being justice-seeking individuals. By asking these essential questions and working in partnership with my child’s daycare, I’m confident that we can create an environment that fosters compassion, celebrates diversity and lays the foundation for a just and equitable society. After all, raising the next generation of compassionate leaders begins with the choices we make today.
