The 2018 Oscar nominations were announced bright and early this morning, and while there are still a lot of dudes, the list is chock-full of history-making female nominations. From Meryl Streep’s impassioned role as Katharine Graham in The Post to Mary J. Blige’s double nomination for Mudbound, here are five women who rewrote Academy Awards history with their Oscar nods.

1. Rachel Morrison- ‘Mudbound’

Morris secured her place in Hollywood as the first-ever female director of photography to receive an Oscar nomination for cinematography. 

2. Octavia Spencer- ‘The Shape of Water’

Today Spencer became the first black woman to earn two consecutive Oscar nods following a win. She won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2012 for The Help and was nominated in the same category in 2017 for Hidden Figures and 2018 for The Shape of Water. Spencer is also tied with Viola Davis (Fences) as the most nominated black actress in Academy Awards history. 

3. Dee Rees - ‘Mudbound’

Rees is the first black woman to receive recognition for Best Adapted Screenplay. The writer-director of Netflix’s period film wrote the script alongside Virgil Williams.

4. Meryl Streep - ‘The Post’

Queen Streep broke her own record as the recipient of the most Oscars noms. With her nomination for The Post her record of 20 now bumps to 21. 

5. Mary J. Blige- ‘Mudbound’

After pulling in nominations for Actress in a Supporting Role and Original Song, Blige is officially the first person to be nominated for best performance and best song in one year.

The Oscars will air on March 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT with host Jimmy Kimmel. We can’t wait to see these ladies snag their statues.
