‘5 De Mayo’ event showcases Mexican culture

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez celebrated the Mexican culture on Friday with its annual “5 De Mayo” celebration.

Cinco de Mayo is an annual holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, according to the History Channel.

“It’s a Mexican holiday that is celebrated more and more in the United States, more than in Mexico… the Battle of Puebla was one of the most iconic battles that our Mexican army won in Mexican territory…” Maria Erazo, a member of the Committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez, said.

In the U.S., the holiday has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Friday’s event worked to share the Mexican culture with West Michigan and raise funds for college scholarships, Erazo explained.

The event was held at the Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Piazza and featured music by University of Michigan student Abel E. Muoz and authentic Mexican cuisine.
