Whether you're playing a solo campaign and want a premium sonic experience without disturbing those around you, or you just want to trash-talk other players online, a gaming headset is a must for players. A nice headset improves your spatial awareness in games, and it makes the experience feel even more realistic.

Gaming headphones feature an over-ear design on almost all occasions in order to better accommodate their massive audio drivers. Higher-end offerings will help you take your gaming experience up a notch by offering support for DTS and Dolby Surround Sound standards, but we've also highlighted headsets that still sound superb without breaking the bank. We've sorted the best from the rest to find the best-sounding and most comfortable headsets available, and included picks for the PC and every major gaming console.

FAQs: Everything Else You've Wondered About Gaming Headsets

Don't worry! If you have a few questions before you drop some serious cash on a gaming headset, we have you covered with a few of the most commonly asked questions about them.

Q: What is the best gaming headset for the PlayStation 4?

A: Every single one of our above picks are compatible with the PlayStation 4. If you want a wired headset, we recommend the HyperX Cloud Revolver S, but if you’re buying a wireless one, we’d go with the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless.

Q: Is every gaming headset compatible with the Xbox One?

A: Unfortunately, no. The Xbox One is the trickiest console to buy a gaming headset for. Previously, Microsoft required you to purchase a separate stereo adapter to use a 3.5-millimeter headset. Fortunately, the newest Xbox One controllers have a built-in 3.5-millimeter jack, just like the one you’d find on a PlayStation 4 controller or PC, so the adapter is no longer necessary. As for wireless headsets, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One headsets run at different frequencies, so make sure you're buying the correct one for your console. We recommend the ASTRO Gaming A50 wireless gaming headset for Xbox One users. You can read more about Xbox One headset compatibility here.

Q: Which gaming headset is best for the Nintendo Switch?

A: We recommend getting a wired headset for the Switch. We’d go with SteelSeries’ Arctis 3 headset. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and relatively portable. Plus, it’s nice-looking and quite affordable.

Some wireless USB headphones are also compatible with the Switch. You just need to open the door on the back of your console’s dock and plug your headphones’ USB receiver into an open USB port. However, their microphones will not work.

At the moment, there aren’t many viable solutions for in-game and voice chat with the Switch because Nintendo has gamers download a smartphone app for voice chatting. This means that the audio of your friends talking is separate from the in-game audio. To remedy this and combine the two audio streams, Nintendo sells a headset and adapter that comes with a trio of 3.5-millimeter aux cables. One cable goes from the Switch's headphone port to the dongle, one runs from your smartphone to the dongle, and the last one connects the dongle to your headset. It’s very complex, so we recommend just holding off until Nintendo releases a better headset — or an update that allows wireless headphones' microphones to work.

Q: What headset is best for PC Gamers?

A: Any of our headset picks work with the PC, because your computer has a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, but we’d go with the Arctis Pro + GameDAC headset for its impeccable audio quality.

Q: Can I use a headset with my smartphone or tablet?

A: If your smartphone has a 3.5-millimeter audio jack, or you have a dongle for the port, you can use any of our picks with your smartphone or tablet.

Q: Do any headsets have Bluetooth?

A: SteelSeries offers the best headsets that support Bluetooth. If you have a large budget, we’d go with the Arctis Pro Wireless, but if you want to save some cash, opt for the Arctis Bluetooth instead.
