5 Fall Decor Trends Designers Are Eyeing Right Now

The dog days of summer are officially upon us, and as the temperatures begin to cool, many are eagerly swapping out their spring and summer home decor for fall-inspired items. Pumpkins, warm color palettes, and fall foliage are classic decor pieces, but if you’re looking to try something new this year there are lots of on-trend options.

We asked several design experts to weigh in on the top fall decor trends that they are eyeing right now, and here’s what they had to say.

Rich Jewel Tones

Earthy, autumnal hues are a timeless choice for fall, but this year designers expect to see more jewel tones integrated into people’s decor. Think deep burgundies, purples, emerald greens, and royal blues, says Rudolph Diesel, a London-based interior designer. These rich tones are a fun twist on classic fall colors that lend to a bold, yet inviting, space.

You can bring jewel tones into your space in a variety of different ways, but using textiles is a popular choice. Luxurious (yet cozy) fabrics like velvet pair well with jewel tones and make excellent throw pillow covers, curtains, or even seasonal decor pieces like plush pumpkins. Bouquets of fresh flowers are another great choice since many fall bloomers are naturally jewel-toned (dahlias, marigolds, mums, zinnias, and more).

Natural Elements

Don’t be afraid to bring the outdoors in this fall. Design experts predict that biophilic design isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Incorporating natural elements into your fall decor is an effortless way to dress your space up for the change in seasons.

“This year, we’ll see a surge in the use of dried flowers and grasses, such as pampas grass and wheat, as well as rustic wood accents,” Diesel says. A bowl full of seasonal fruit or vegetables also makes a great addition to a kitchen or dining room during the harvest season.

Plenty of Texture

Fall is the season of texture. Adding texture to a space can help it feel warmer and cozier, which is exactly what you want during the crisp autumn months. Dried flowers and stems, woven baskets, natural wood, and heavy fabrics are all great ways to add texture to your space for the season.

Brad Ramsey, principal designer and founder of Brad Ramsey Interiors, says that “nubby” textures like boucle and thick wool are set to be popular. Try incorporating them into your home using throw pillows and blankets, ottomans, and other textiles that can be easily switched back out once spring rolls around again.

Quiet Luxury

Quiet luxury is a design style that started in the fashion world and made its way into interior design. Experts expect to see this style utilized a lot this fall when it comes to decor.

“Quiet luxury in design emphasizes understatement, allowing the materials and textures to take center stage,” says Ginger Curtis, founder and CEO of Urbanology Designs in Dallas, Texas. Essentially, less is more, but with a focus on high-quality materials for an effortlessly luxurious look.

The transition from summer to fall decor in the quiet luxury style is minimal. Try adding warmer colors, switching out summer florals for a couple of high-quality real or faux branches, adding a cozy throw blanket, and incorporating earthy materials like wood and copper into your decor. White pillar candles and candlesticks are also great choices that instantly help to up your space’s coziness factor without going overboard.

Statement Lighting

Gone are the days when builder-grade light fixtures were ignored and overlooked in the home. More and more people are switching out these standard light fixtures for something a bit bolder, and designers expect to see this trend continue this fall.

“Light fixtures are the jewelry of the home," says Devon Wegmen, founder and design director of Chicago-based design firm, Devon Grace Interiors. "These days we’re seeing such incredible new designs that act as pieces of art in the space."

If you still have a few boring light fixtures in your home, try switching them out this fall for an eye-catching statement fixture. You can also try out this trend in a simpler, more low-commitment way by adding a bold table lamp or floor lamp that doesn’t need to be hardwired in. Plus, adding extra light sources to a room is a great way to create some ambient lighting and make your space feel more inviting—just in time for the cozy season.
