We’re only four months into 2023 and there have already been multiple celebrity breakups. Obviously the most major of which is Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval, whose breakup was so earth-shattering that people who had no idea who these two humans were five minutes ago now know everything about their personal lives, and I’m pretty sure Merriam-Webster is considering adding “Scandoval” to the dictionary. But aside from everything going on with Ariana, Tom, and Raquel “Actually Just Rachel” Leviss, there are several other pretty high-profile breakups to discuss—like, HELLO, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, anyone?!??!?!?
Other shout-outs include the sudden end of Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun’s engagement, Camila Cabello and Austin Kevitch calling it quits, and Maisie Williams and Reuben Selby parting ways after five years together. May 2023: Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner
Christine Baumgartner filed for divorce after 18 years of marriage, which Kevin Costner’s rep confirmed in a statement to People: “It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action. We ask that his, Christine’s, and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time.”
April 2023: Peter Weber and Kelley Flanagan
These two entered yet another "off-again" phase in their relationship, which Peter confirmed during a beauty convention in Canada when he said "I am" in response to an interviewer calling him single.
April 2023: Gigi Paris and Glen Powell
Despite rumors to the contrary (ahem), these two broke up because of long-distance, with a source telling People, “They had been on the rocks since Top Gun came out. Gigi was never happy with the long-distance filming, and when she came to Australia, they both decided to break up for good.”
April 2023: Halsey and Alev Aydin
News of the breakup dropped with details pertaining to the former couple’s child, including that the singer was reportedly seeking full physical custody. At the time, a source who spoke with Page Six revealed that “the split with them is totally amicable and they are co-parenting; they are going to raise their son together.” They also provided insight into Halsey’s decision to file for full physical custody, explaining that they “just had to file that way” because they are going on tour in the summer “and it’s a formality so the singer can bring their son with them.”
May 2023: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn
Entertainment Tonight reports that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have split up after six years of dating. The breakup went down “a few weeks ago” and was “not dramatic.” So…why the split? Apparently, “the relationship had just run its course. It’s why [Joe] hasn’t been spotted at any shows.”
April 2023: Elle Fanning and Max Minghella
Elle recently revealed that she and Max had called it quits after more than four years together in a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK. However (!!), she still maintained, “I’m a hopeless romantic. I believe in love at first sight. Call me crazy, but I believe in those things. I feel that it’s my destiny.” During the convo, Elle even opened up about how much she wants to have children someday. BRB, taking notes on how to maintain such a positive outlook after a breakup bc her whole vibe is just *chef’s kiss*.
March 2023: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth
Reese and Jim surprised fans in March when they posted a joint Insta statement confirming their divorce after nearly 12 years of marriage. “It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together,” they wrote. “Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”
March 2023: Brie Larson and Elijah Allan-Blitz
Brie revealed she was single in an interview with Harper’s Bazzar, saying, “I don’t have a next job. I don’t have a home. I don’t have a partner. I don’t have a plan. I’m just completely open.”
March 2023: Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval
We have a whole explainer on the ins and outs of this drama over here, but TL;DR: Tom Sandoval cheated on Ariana Madix with their Vanderpump Rules costar Raquel Leviss, and it turns out their relationship had been going on FOR MONTHS.
February 2023: Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun
Avril and Mod Sun ended their relationship less than a year after getting engaged, and now Avril appears to be dating Tyga? Anyway, a source told People that “Avril and Mod Sun have been on and off for the past two months but are no longer together as a couple.” Which was apparently a surprise for Mod Sun, considering his rep released a statement saying, “They were together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour, so if anything has changed, that’s news to him.”
February 2023: Maddie Ziegler and Eddie Benjamin
These two split after three years together back in February, with a source confirming the “amicable” decision to People. TBD what went wrong, but back in January 2022, Maddie told ET, “I feel very excited every day that I get to date him. We have such a good time together and we were best friends for a really long time before we dated. It’s like I’m just hanging out with my best friend every day. It’s really fun. It’s honestly the best. I love it.”
February 2023: Camila Cabello and Austin Kevitch
Camila and Austin’s split was actually confirmed in the Lox Club newsletter (he’s the CEO!), but a source also told Entertainment Tonight that “there’s no bad blood between them and they’re both just very busy in their careers. It became difficult to balance that and their relationship.”
Back in November 2022, Camila gave her thoughts on dating to Drew Barrymore, saying, “I feel like ‘date’ is even the wrong word. For me, dating is all about making friends. Just focus on making friends, and then if you’re at a dinner party and your focus is on making great friends, on friendships, and then if there’s a physical attraction to somebody, then it happens but it’s natural. But you’re not focused on giving, like, three hours or a full night of dating to a stranger because that’s a waste of life.”
February 2023: Maisie Williams and Reuben Selby
Maisie and Reuben ended their relationship after five years, news that Maisie announced via Insta Stories—saying it was the “end of an era.”
“@reubenselby_ and I decided to end our relationship,” she wrote. “Since we met 5 years ago, our connection always extended deeply into our shared, and separate, creative careers…and it will continue to do so.…This decision is something we are so grateful for so as we can protect the magic that we can’t help but emit whenever we put our brains together.”
