5 Beauty Trends That Dominated London Fashion Week

As tends to be the case at London Fashion Week, beauty hinged on the juxtaposition of punk rebellion and ladylike romance this season. Flashes of sparkle were subversively edged on the gazes at Halpern, while Simone Rocha’s twinkly hair ornaments shined more subtly. Then there was the slew of sideswept hairstyles, with Marques’Almeida swooping strands over one eye to new romantic effect and Ports 1961 injecting the look with a Gallic sensibility by way of effortless bends. But most distinct of all were the varying takes on unconventional graphic eyeliner, from Matty Bovan’s bold teal slashes to Victoria Beckham’s smoky crease lines. Here, the five standout beauty trends that stole the runway.

Playing off the collection’s intricate drop and chandelier earrings, Simone Rocha presented a dazzling array of spiked silver headbands and pins, each encrusted with pearls and crystals to gleaming effect. And taking the adornment to ear level, Halpern bestowed several models with ear ornaments sculpted into mesmerizing sunburst shapes. On the other side of the spectrum, there were timeless, pretty touches: Ashish and Bora Aksu each applied fresh flowers to the hair, while Erdem secured long, low braids with black ribbon.

Alternatives to the perennially classic cat-eye manifested throughout the week. Deconstructed liner looks were administered backstage at Matty Bovan and Simone Rocha; the former alternating between teal and khaki drawn across the eye from inner corner to the brow bone, and the latter encasing gazes in sooty strokes for a punk edge. Then there was Victoria Beckham, who, true to form, put a prim twist on alternative liner, playing up negative space with neat dashes along the creases in rich burgundy, fuchsia, and turquoise shades.

The ultimate cool-girl hair hack? Sweep it across. Or so commanded the Marques’Almeida show, as bleached waves, auburn spirals, and raven corkscrews fell insouciantly over the brow. For a polished but not-too-polished interpretation, look no further than Ports 1961, where inspiration was drawn from French women for an undone feel. The case for a swooped effect was further cemented at Victoria Beckham, with a bit of part play giving way to an elegant asymmetrical silhouette.

A cross between ’70s disco and ’90s rave at House of Holland can only mean one thing: glitter, and lots of it. As such, the smatterings of holographic flecks in lilac, ultraviolet, and lime green could not be tamed, layered across vivid shadow on the lids and all the way up the temples. At Halpern, precise curves of inky black shadow were topped off with a coat of reflective onyx glitter.

There was a stunning assortment of intricate braids in the mix at Rixo, with tiny braids framing the face and intricate cornrows woven back vertically. At Erdem, hair was inspired by photographer and silent movie actress Tina Modotti: Lengths were brushed back over the ears and woven from the nape down. Bora Aksu offered up twin plaits with whisper-light wisps. Finally, at Ashish, messy braids were molded into bohemian updos that looked perfectly lived-in.
