It pretty much goes without saying, but Jennifer Lopez is #healthgoals on so many levels. She regularly crushes it at the gym, she follows a healthy diet, and she's basically a living, breathing ad for living a healthy lifestyle. Also, have you seen the woman lately? She's 50 and she looks like she's in her 20s. With that in mind, Women's Health is breaking down J.Lo's biggest health habits. Try one or steal them all to inject a little more J.Lo into your life.
Don’t skimp on abs workouts.
J.Lo’s trainer told O, the Oprah Magazine that the singer's abs workout consists of a set of 50 hanging ab raises followed by 50 rope crunches and 50 incline sit ups with a 45-pound plate. Then, she does another set of 35 each, followed by a third set of 21 each. Oh, and she doesn’t take breaks.
Challenge yourself.
Jennifer and her fiance Alex Rodriguez came up with a 10-day challenge, and whew—it sounded intense. "It's no sugar, no carbs," J.Lo explained on the TODAY show. "Anything that has sugar and carbs in it, you cannot have." J.Lo and A-Rod both said it was tough to stick with the diet, but J.Lo said she liked how she felt so much that she might do it again.
Share pics of your progress.
J.Lo regularly shared photos on Instagram of progress during her 10-day challenge, including this shot of her ridiculous body.
Try pole dancing.
"I have a lot of respect for people who do the pole," J.Lo told Jimmy Kimmel. In order to train for her role as a pole dancer in Hustlers, J.Lo recruited an acrobat from Cirque du Soleil to teach her how to pole-dance. She even installed a portable pole in her house. "It's, like, acrobatic, it's a different muscle group," she said. "And the things that they do with their legs and everything and go upside down...it's hard."
Avoid processed foods.
J.Lo says she skips anything containing sugar, and tries to avoid processed foods as much as she can.
Rethink your relationship with caffeine.
J.Lo's trainer Dodd Romero told Us Weekly that the star usually skips coffee, unless it's decaf. "I haven’t had caffeine in years," she says.
…and alcohol, while you’re at it.
J.Lo will have little sips of alcohol here and there, but Romero says she usually takes a pass when it comes to drinking.
Load up on good proteins.
Romero told O, the Oprah Magazine that J.Lo is big on protein. She sticks to whole sources like egg whites, white meat turkey, chicken breast, grass-fed beef, and salmon or sea bass.
Find sneaky ways to get more protein.
J.Lo is so big on protein, Romero says she sneaks it into any snack foods, like smoothies or pancakes made with protein powder.
Rock your favorite looks with confidence.
At age 50, Jennifer stole the show at Milan Fashion Week. She closed the runway at Versace's spring 2020 show, wearing a replica of the iconic green jungle gown she originally wore to the Grammy Awards 20 years before—and she looked amazing in it.
Get a gym buddy.
J.Lo and A-Rod regularly share videos on Instagram of themselves totally crushing it at the gym together. A-Rod even shares their exact workouts sometimes, so you can copy them.
Don't skip workouts.
Last July, J.Lo shared a selfie in the gym on her birthday. In 2015, Jennifer told Us Weekly that she "very rarely skips a workout."
Focus on the perks of getting a workout in.
"Sometimes when I get home and I'm not feeling so great, I make myself go to the gym," J.Lo told Redbook in 2010. "Then I come home and take a shower, put on a great outfit, some makeup, tie my hair up, and I feel pepped up and great about myself."
Don't neglect your butt.
According to recent Instagram Story photos, J.Lo was doing some "show day prep," and focused on "biceps, back, and booty." Because, you know, you can't forget your bum when squeezing in a pre-show pump.
Go all in with workouts.
"She’s genetically blessed, she’s physically gifted with an incredible amount of physical energy, but also this beautiful amount of mental and emotional energy," another trainer, David Kirsch, told People in 2017. "She’s very connected to her body, and she’s got crazy discipline."
Try to eat organic.
"She needs really good fuel for all the things that she's doing," another one of her trainers, Tracy Anderson, told People. "It's all organic and it's all very well thought out, with the balance of very high quality proteins and a lot of nutrient-dense food."
Go to town on water.
J.Lo drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated, especially before workouts, Romero told Us Weekly.
Start your day with a shake.
J.Lo told People that she usually starts her day with a shake. Her go-to: berries, Greek yogurt, cinnamon, honey, ice cubes, a squirt of fresh lemon juice, and a scoop of protein powder.
Have quality salads.
For lunch, J.Lo usually has a veggie-filled salad, like with kale, toasted pumpkin seeds, crumbled queso, minced shallots, and a dressing made with lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil, People says. She's also a fan of salad with salmon, broccoli, peppers, zucchini, and a drizzle of vinaigrette.
Snack on nuts.
J.Lo likes to have a handful of nuts a day, Romero told Us Weekly.
Find a healthy spin on your favorite comfort food.
For dinner, J.Lo likes having a lean protein with veggies and complex carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes, or quinoa. The quinoa "feels like rice and beans, which I grew up with," she told Us Weekly. "And I like pork and chicken—especially Puerto Rican style!"
Try to eat well, even when you’re out.
"Most restaurants offer healthy, low-calorie meals, so I watch for things on the menu that fit my lifestyle," J.Lo told Hello. "I'll have a salad or some fish with veggies. And I make sure I drink lots of water throughout the meal."
...but treat yourself sometimes.
"Throughout the years I’ve learned the importance of maintaining a healthier […] diet," J.Lo told People. "I still eat some of the foods I love, but in moderation. I don’t deprive myself."
Have fun with your workouts.
A-Rod recently shared this hilarious photo of J.Lo during one of her workouts. "I’ve heard of hot yoga. Even goat yoga. What kind of yoga is this?" he wrote. "That’s karate 💥💥💥what chu know bout dat," she responded.
Set your workout to music.
J.Lo works out with Anderson at least four to five times a week, the trainer told People. “I do an upper body warmup with her,” Anderson said. “We do two songs without weights, and then we add three-pound weights, and sometimes I add a song with five-pound weights as well.”
Don’t mess around with your health.
J.Lo is pretty clear about how you can get a body like hers: "You got to work out, you got to watch what you eat," she told Us Weekly. "It's a job—you've got to buckle down."
Embrace your curves.
“I think the idea of being curvaceous, being a little bit bigger than normal or smaller than normal, all of that is okay,” she told Extra. “As long as it’s healthy. I embrace who I am. I feel sexy, I feel youthful, I feel pretty sometimes!"
Fill up with fresh foods.
J.Lo is huge on eating fresh stuff. "Everything is fresh. There's nothing processed—just [protein powder] in a shake if we do a protein shake one day," Anderson told People.
Limit your salt and sugar intake.
Even when she's not on a challenge, J.Lo does her best to avoid salt and sugar, Anderson told People.
Be patient with weight loss.
J.Lo gets that her body is going to fluctuate throughout life. "I remember when I had baby fat and my thighs were so out of proportion to my ankles," the mom of two told The Telegraph. "Then I remember dropping weight and being quite thin. Then, when I got pregnant, I remember watching my back, belly, and butt grow and thinking, 'I will never be the same again.' Then I remember right after the twins were born having that weird jiggly belly—and kind of loving that, too. Because I earned that jiggly belly. Then came trying to get my body back into shape and how long that took. A whole year."
Just dance.
"I am 100 percent convinced that working out is part of what makes me so happy. Dance has always been a huge part of my life and taking the time to move my body and do something that's so good for me is key to my happiness,” J.Lo told Hello. “When my confidence is lagging, I dance. There's something about seeing what my body is capable of and feeling the endorphin rush that comes with a good dance session that really helps boost my confidence and my mood. I still consider myself a dancer at heart and I love it."
Make fitness a priority.
“I really believe that when you take care of yourself and work to stay healthy, you're better able to take care of those you love. So working out is definitely a priority for me," J.Lo told Hello.
Give hot yoga a go.
J.Lo is obsessed with TruFusion, a fitness studio with a variety of classes, including yoga and bootcamp in rooms heated to up to 120 degrees. (A-Rod is also a fan, BTW.)
Be good to your body.
J.Lo told InStyle that she’s been careful about her health for years. “I’ve taken care of myself, and now it shows,” she says.
Be confident in yourself.
J.Lo says that she's never struggled with body image. “I didn’t realize what I was doing—I was just being myself,” she told InStyle of all the attention on her curves when she first became famous.
Push your partner.
When your S.O. is healthy, it benefits you, too. A-Rod recently said on Instagram that J.Lo pushes him at the gym. “When your workout partner kicks your a$$,” he captioned shots of himself and J.Lo exercising together.
Work out with an app.
When she worked out at the Dallas Cowboys’ gym, J.Lo gave a shoutout to the Fitplan app in her post, which hosts workout routines from celebrity trainers like Melissa Alcantara (aka Kim Kardashian's trainer) and Instagram famous trainer Katie Crewe.
Find a schedule that works for you.
J.Lo prefers to stay up late. Like, really, really late. Apparently, she likes to stay up until 4 or 5 a.m., and then sleep in until 10, 11, or noon. “That’s a better schedule for me,” she told Variety.
Believe you can be healthy.
J.Lo told Variety that she got a bad cold at the start of her It’s My Party Tour. “I took wellness shots and steam baths,” she said. “I knew a lot of it had to do with stress and exhaustion, so if I could just get on a healthy regimen, I would bounce back. I willed myself to health.”
Take your power back when you’re nervous.
In her new movie, Hustlers, J.Lo plays Ramona, the most confident stripper in New York City. And, it in, she had to perform a dance in a G-string. “I was terrified," Jennifer told Variety. "I felt exposed. I was like, ‘I’ve never done anything like this. I’m going to be up there in f—ing dental floss. What is this? Who is this person?’ And then you get up there, and you have to have a ‘f— you,’ empowered attitude. You have to take your power back. You have to be so bold."
