4 Tips to Stand Out in the Crowd

Do you have huge visions for what you want to create in the world, but no idea how to actually make them happen?

Perhaps you think the space you’re in is too crowded, or too hard to break into. What would make anyone notice you over all the other extremely qualified and intelligent people who have big ideas?

I met Dorie Clark at an author’s dinner in New York City this winter. She graduated from college at 18, earned her master’s degree at 20 (from Harvard), and then went to work for major political campaigns. Even though Dorie was always the unique one in her circles, she struggled to find her niche. So she turned that struggle into her passion, and addresses in her newest book a common question we all have: How do I stand out and make my ideas heard when so many other great voices are speaking loudly?

This is something we all struggle with. After all — who wants to live a life where they are the most average person in every realm of their life? No one, because it sounds terrible. Dorie offers four tips for sculpting yourself into the type of person who is worthy of being paid attention:

  1. Figure out your ideas that are worth attention and are worthwhile. Find the thing that impassions you and make that the thing you stand out for.

  2. Figure out how you can share it with the world in a way that makes you excited.

  3. Keep an open mind. If you are too locked in one mindset, you miss opportunities and possibilities that come from things outside of your comfort zone.

  4. Look at what makes you “different” and then make it your advantage. What do you bring to the table that no one else does?

Everyone is unique. Everyone is different. Don’t question yourself. Your perceived weakness can be your strength — so change your perception. Sometimes we are just a few paces away from seeing something in its entirety.

If you take a step back to look at your world and the kind of impact you want to make on it, what would you change to make that happen? My hope is that you would choose to stand out.
