While every home has its own style and features, there’s one thing they pretty much all have in common: tiles. Whether they’re used in the kitchen, bathroom, entryway, or elsewhere, tiles are a common choice for the sake of both practicality and aesthetics. If you’re currently planning to renovate your kitchen or bathroom you might be in the market for something new. Here are four tile trends that have longevity, according to a design pro.

Subway Tiles

This one's a tried and true classic. Love them or hate them, according to interior designer Emma Beryl, subway tiles are far from a flash in the pan. “They are clean, classic, and versatile, making them an easy go-to," Beryl says. "They also come in a few different sizes so they can be applied differently than the traditional brick layout but remain classic. They can be straight stacked for a more mid-century or modern look or they can be herringbone for something a bit more classic.”

Subway tiles are great because a basic white ceramic subway tile can be sourced fairly inexpensively. They can also be used in the bathroom or kitchen. “In the bathroom, subway tile is always a classic and clean choice just like in the kitchen," Beryl says. "It can come in so many colors ... The options are endless making it something that will be around forever."

Zellige Tiles

In the past year, zellige tiles have had a major resurgence. “Zellige has been around for a long time but they are becoming more and more popular in the design world," Beryl says. "They are typically single-color square or rectangular tiles but they are all unique and have an imperfect look to them. They make a space feel more casual and comfortable but they are very rich and textural.”

There’s also a versatility to these tiles that other types of tiles simply don’t have. They can easily work in a traditional, contemporary, or transitional space. Zellige is very stylish yet has a timeless feel as opposed to being a micro-trend.

Checkerboard Tiles

While this look never really went away, checkerboard pattern tiles have made a big comeback. There are so many different ways to create this pattern.

“Marble, or ceramic replicas of marble, square tiles in a checkerboard pattern are trendy but they can be adapted to be louder with two strongly contrasting colors or they can be softer and more subdued with tones that are more alike," Beryl says. "These bring warmth and take direct inspiration from classical design."

While certainly on-trend, checkerboard tiles have a timeless and sophisticated quality to them. This tile style is certainly worth considering if you're currently planning a renovation.

Small Tiles

While larger tiles have been on-trend for a very long time, designers have also seen a resurgence of smaller tiles. While they can be used as a backsplash in either a kitchen or bathroom, they are particularly useful as bathroom floor tiles, according to Beryl. “Using a smaller scale tile that allows for more grout lines, such as a penny round or their hexagonal counterpart allows for more grout to be used to secure slippery feet," she explains. "They also come in so many classic colors and you can have patterns in them making them a bit more custom to the space.”
