It’s a story straight from any thrifter’s wildest dreams. A Italian glass vase purchased for $3.99 at a Goodwill outside of Richmond, Virginia today sold for $107,100, including the buyer’s premium, at an auction in New York.

The vessel, defined by swirling strokes of red and green, is part of the “Pennellate” series legendary Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa designed for Venini in the 1940s. This particular example is one of only a handful known to still be in existence and was one of 33 lots in Wright’s Important Italian Glass sale this morning. The hammer fell at $85,000, smashing an initial high estimate of $50,000.

“It was a certainly a very strong result,” says Sara Blumberg, Wright’s glass specialist. “There was a lot of interest, of course, a lot of bidders. We were all very pleased to have it with us here at Wright.”

The vase was a chance discovery by Brookneal, Virginia, resident Jessica Vincent, who regularly frequents local flea markets and second-hand shops. The vase stood out for its color and weight, but she had no idea that she had a masterwork on her hands.

“[The bids] just kept going up and up and up. I was holding my breath,” says Vincent, who viewed the sale online. “It's just really unbelievable that my $3.99 vase sold for $85,000. It’s just a blessing.”

According to Blumberg, the vase attracted an international contingent of glass connoisseurs. While the buyer remains anonymous, “It's gone to a very good private collection,” she notes. “It’s really just a lovely story start to finish.”

Vincent plans on using the proceeds to renovate a farmhouse she recently purchased with her partner, Naza. “I’ll probably go to dinner,” she adds. “I don't even know how to feel right now honestly, it’s just very surreal. It’s kind of like winning the lottery.”

And after such a score, will she continue to frequent thrift stores? “Absolutely,” Vincent says. "I plan on going today.”
